Abstract

The increasing complexity of social, ethical, and environmental challenges in the twenty-first century has reinforced the need for an educational approach that promotes not only academic excellence but also moral responsibility, character development, and sustainable living. In this context, Value-Based Education has emerged as a holistic educational approach that nurtures ethical values, responsible behaviour, and social commitment among learners. The present paper examines the significance of Value-Based Education in fostering holistic learner development, analyses its interrelationship with Character Formation and Sustainable Living, and explores the educational implications of integrating these dimensions within the framework of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). The study adopts a qualitative conceptual review methodology based on the analysis and synthesis of scholarly books, peer-reviewed journal articles, policy documents, and reports published by national and international organizations. The review reveals that Value-Based Education serves as the foundation for holistic development by promoting ethical reasoning, empathy, responsibility, and social awareness among learners. It further demonstrates that character formation is a natural outcome of value-oriented educational experiences and that well-developed character encourages environmentally responsible, socially inclusive, and sustainable lifestyles. The findings also highlight that the integration of values, character education, and sustainability within curriculum, pedagogy, teacher education, institutional culture, and assessment practices is essential for preparing responsible and globally competent citizens. The paper concludes that Value-Based Education, Character Formation, and Sustainable Living should be viewed as complementary dimensions of holistic education rather than independent educational goals. Their effective integration can significantly contribute to the development of ethical, compassionate, and environmentally conscious individuals capable of promoting sustainable development and social well-being in accordance with the vision of NEP 2020 and the global agenda for sustainable development.
