Lived Experiences of Department Heads on ICT Integration in School Administration in Junior High Schools
Abstract
This study explored the lived experiences of department heads in integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into instructional and administrative Management within schools. Guided by phenomenological inquiry, the research sought to uncover how ICT shaped daily practices, the meanings derived from participants’ narratives, the core themes that captured the essence of their experiences, and the program that could be proposed for effective ICT integration. One of the themes that stood out was ICT as an enabler of efficiency and confidence. The heads of departments consistently pointed out technology's ability to streamline documentation, reporting, and communication processes. This improved efficiency by reducing time waste, improving accuracy, and increasing transparency, thereby instilling confidence in the products produced by the process. The teachers were able to develop more exciting lessons for the students. Another important theme was ICT in leadership and strategic oversight. This is where ICT-enabled data-driven decision-making and governance come together. ICT also faced barriers that prevented its full use; another theme was the barriers to ICT integration. From the narratives, ICT emerged as both a technical enabler and a cultural shift in school administration. It enhanced confidence in outputs, strengthened transparency, and enabled data-driven leadership. Moreover, it bridged communication among stakeholders, motivated teachers to innovate, and empowered students to take ownership of their learning. These benefits, however, were contingent upon reliable infrastructure, equitable access, and continuous training. The essence of participants’ experiences was captured in four interconnected themes: ICT as a Tool for Efficiency and Confidence; ICT as a Driver of Collaboration and Pedagogy; ICT in Leadership and Strategic Oversight; and Barriers to ICT Integration. Based on these insights, a comprehensive program for effective ICT integration was proposed, emphasizing infrastructure readiness, capacity building, leadership and governance, collaborative culture, and sustainability.
