Abstract
In the context of a global deficit in traditional protein resources (fishmeal and soybean meal) and the urgent need for organic waste recycling, the development of insect-based technologies has acquired strategic importance. The Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) is recognized as the most efficient biotechnological agent for converting biomass into high-quality feed-grade protein and lipids. Expanding the evidence base regarding the applicability of larval derivatives in the diets of productive livestock is a priority task for modern animal husbandry in the Russian Federation. This article provides a comprehensive review of the fundamental and applied aspects of rearing Hermetia illucens. The first section examines the physiological characteristics of the insect: its short life cycle (approximately 41 days), the unique morphology of the polyphagous digestive tract, and the capacity for active substrate alkalinization. The mechanisms of midgut enzymatic systems and the role of the microbiome in adapting larvae to various organic wastes - ranging from food residues to cattle manure - are described. The second part analyzes the efficiency of bioconversion. It is established that the chemical composition of the final biomass is directly programmed by the substrate formulation: carbohydrate-rich diets promote lipid accumulation (up to 57% fat), whereas protein-rich substrates stimulate protein synthesis (up to 62% in defatted flour). Particular attention is paid to the mineral profile of the larvae, which exhibit an exceptionally high calcium concentration (up to 8–9%) and the ability to accumulate trace elements from their environment. Technological parameters for industrial production are considered, including optimal substrate moisture (60–75%), stocking density, and the influence of mechanical pretreatment on insect metabolic rates. The third section focuses on a detailed analysis of the product's chemical composition. The amino acid profile is characterized by high levels of lysine, leucine, and valine. The lipid fraction is distinguished by the predominance of saturated medium-chain fatty acids, specifically lauric acid (up to 59%), which possesses pronounced antibacterial properties. Consequently, Hermetia illucens L. represent a versatile raw material for creating environmentally friendly, high-protein, and energy-dense feed additives. The biomass features a stable amino acid profile, while its lipid composition can be purposefully modified through dietary manipulation. Processing products derived from Hermetia illucens are capable of effectively replacing expensive components in compound feeds, thereby reducing the import dependency of the domestic feed industry.
