Abstract

In this research article, a hydrothermal approach was adopted to synthesise the Cu-BTC metal–organic frameworksand SEM, FTIR, BET and XRD analyses was utilised to characterise them. The adsorption ability of the same wasexamined towards both metal ions (cadmium and lead) in water solutions under varying experimental parameters, viz. MOF adsorbent dose, temperature, pH of the medium, time duration, etc. The experimental results revealedthat the synthesised MOFs exhibited rapid adsorption kinetics along with high removal efficiency of 88%for cadmiumand 98% for lead. The adsorption isotherm results showed the best agreement with the Langmuir plot, withamaximum uptake capacity reaching 202 mg/g for both Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions. In addition, kinetic analysis showedthat the process follows PSO behaviour. These results can be used as a basis for further research in relation totheregeneration of adsorbents and wastewater treatment on an industrial scale. The research aligns with SDG6: emphasising clean water and improved sanitation.
