Development of Emotional Intelligence through Life Skills Training among Adolescents: A Literature Review

Abstract

Adolescence is a period marked by rapid emotional, social, and cognitive changes. During this stage, young people face academic pressure, peer influence, identity formation, and engagement in risk-taking behaviours. Emotional intelligence, defined as the ability to understand, utilize, and regulate one's own emotions as well as those of others, is increasingly recognized as a protective factor contributing to adolescents' well-being, relationships, and success. Life Skills Education, promoted by the World Health Organization since the 1990s, provides a systematic approach to developing psychosocial competencies among students, which form the foundation for healthy emotional and social development. This paper reviews the conceptual foundations of emotional intelligence and life skills, the theoretical relationships between them, and empirical evidence regarding whether life skills training improves the four components of emotional intelligence, namely understanding emotions, understanding motivation, empathy, and interpersonal relationships, as well as overall emotional intelligence. The review draws upon international meta-analyses, school-based intervention research, and Indian educational studies. The review concludes that the available evidence broadly supports the potential of developing emotional intelligence through structured interventions in school settings. However, evidence from India, particularly from Chhattisgarh and Bilaspur district, remains limited. Existing studies also vary considerably in their methodologies and rarely examine the individual dimensions of emotional intelligence separately. This research gap provides the foundation and rationale for the present study. Abstract in Hindi Language:
