Evaluation of Rainwater Harvesting Technologies for Sustainable Agricultural Water Management

Aug 2026 · European Journal of Aerospace, Aviation and Maritime Spectrum Studies · Vol 6 · 0 citations

Abstract

Rainwater harvesting has emerged as an effective and sustainable approach for addressing water scarcity in agriculture, particularly in regions experiencing irregular rainfall, declining groundwater levels, and increasing climate variability. It involves the collection, storage, and utilization of rainwater from rooftops, land surfaces, and natural catchments for agricultural and domestic purposes. Efficient rainwater harvesting technologies reduce dependence on groundwater and surface water resources while improving water availability during dry periods. Various technologies, including farm ponds, check dams, percolation tanks, contour bunds, rooftop rainwater harvesting systems, recharge pits, subsurface dams, and micro-catchment techniques, have been widely adopted to enhance water conservation and agricultural productivity. These systems improve groundwater recharge, reduce soil erosion, increase soil moisture, enhance water use efficiency, and support climate-resilient farming. Recent advances in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Internet of Things (IoT), automated water monitoring, and precision irrigation have further improved the planning, monitoring, and management of rainwater harvesting structures. However, challenges such as high initial investment, maintenance requirements, land availability, sedimentation, and limited technical awareness continue to affect their widespread adoption. This paper evaluates major rainwater harvesting technologies, examines their contribution to sustainable agricultural water management, assesses their impact on crop productivity and environmental conservation, and discusses emerging innovations and future prospects for promoting efficient water resource management in agriculture.

Evaluating Runoff Potential for Managed Aquifer Recharge for Sustainable Groundwater Management in Coastal Kenya: A Case Study of the Tiwi Aquifer

Increasing reliance on groundwater, declining water tables and saltwater intrusion have intensified water stress along the coastal regions. Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) has served as an effective solution for groundwater management and for enhancing water storage during wet seasons, which is recovered during dry peri...

Soil Salinity under Climate Change in Pakistan: Emerging Challenges and Sustainable Management Approaches for Agriculture

Soil salinity is a major constraint to agricultural productivity, soil health, and food security in Pakistan, particularly under changing climatic conditions. Rising temperatures, increased evapotranspiration, irregular precipitation, droughts, flooding, and sea-level rise can intensify salt accumulation and alter soil...
