Effect of the Slant of Edge Girders on Single‐Span Steel Road Bridges
Abstract
Little comments have been made on the effect of the rotated arrangement of lateral box edge girders. To address this, a parametric numerical model was created that allows for varying the slant. Single spans, varying from 34 to 52 m were considered. The edge girders are designed as box girders with internal stiffening at the crossbeams. Simulations show that the total vertical displacements of the edge girders are almost identical as the slope relative to the vertical of the web plates increases. The horizontal displacements increase with increasing slope. Regarding the equivalent stress in both the flanges and webs of the main girders, increasing the slant first moderately decreases the stress magnitude up to a certain point, beyond which the magnitude may increase steeply. The decisive parameter in this phenomenon is the angular rotation of the principal axes of the cross section.
