The randomized component-oracle complexity of finite-sum nonconvex-concave optimization with a bounded dual domain is characterized, taking the worst case over admissible known dual domains and finite dimensions.
Abstract
We characterize the randomized component-oracle complexity of finite-sum nonconvex-concave optimization with a bounded dual domain. For $\Phi(x)=\max_{y\in Y}n^{-1}\sum_{i=1}^n f_i(x,y)$, the goal is to find an $\varepsilon$-stationary point of the Moreau envelope $\Phi_{1/(2L)}$ with probability at least $2/3$ and a fixed query budget. Let $A=L\Delta/\varepsilon^2$, $B=LD_Y/\varepsilon$, and $\bar B=\max\{1,B\}$, where $\Delta$ bounds the initial primal gap and $D_Y$ bounds the dual diameter. For $A$ above a universal constant, the worst-case complexity is \[ \widetilde\Theta\!\left(n+A\min\left\{ \sqrt n\,\bar B+\bar B^4,\ n^{3/4}\bar B\right\}\right). \] The bounds agree within constants for $B\le n^{1/4}$ and within one logarithm for larger $B$. Upper bounds require only mean-squared averaged smoothness and concavity of the average in the dual variable; lower bounds already hold under individual smoothness. The lower constructions cover adaptive component selection, arbitrary query norms, private randomization, and outputs that were never queried. A cone construction gives the small-diameter bound, while a serial branch construction and balanced replication give the remaining two regimes. On the upper side, a persistent estimator with primal averaging complements accelerated proximal dual steps equipped with an explicit primal certificate. The characterization takes the worst case over admissible known dual domains and finite dimensions.
We study lower bounds on the first-order oracle complexity of smooth nonconvex-concave minimax optimization. We consider objectives $f$ that are jointly $L$-smooth in the primal and dual variables $(x,y)$, concave in $y$, and whose primal value function $\Phi(x) := \max_{y\in\mathcal Y} f(x,y)$ satisfies the initial-ga...
We characterize, up to logarithmic factors, the minimax expected query complexity of finite-sum nonconvex-strongly-concave optimization under mean-squared averaged smoothness. For randomized zero-respecting incremental first-order algorithms, the complexity is $\tilde{\Theta}(n+\min\{\sqrt{n}\,\kappa,n^{3/4}\sqrt{\kapp...
We characterize the oracle complexity of finding first-order stationary points in smooth nonconvex--strongly-concave (NC--SC) minimax optimization when each query provides the full Hessian in addition to the function value and gradient. For $\Phi(x)=\max_y f(x,y)$, assume that $f$ has an $L$-Lipschitz gradient, a $\rho...

We establish tight randomized higher-order oracle complexity for finding first-order stationary points of nonconvex finite sums. Let $n$ be the number of components, $\Delta>0$ the initial objective-gap bound, $L_p>0$ an individual $p$-th derivative Lipschitz bound, and $\epsilon>0$ the target gradient norm. For every...

We establish a randomized first-order lower bound for finding an $\epsilon$-stationary point, $\|\nabla f(x)\|\le \epsilon$, of a nonconvex function with initial gap at most $\Delta$, $L_1$-Lipschitz gradient, and $L_2$-Lipschitz Hessian. Each oracle call returns the exact function value and gradient. Let $Q_{\mathrm{r...

We prove a joint stochastic zeroth-order lower bound for Goldstein stationarity on a Euclidean query ball, even when the ball is guaranteed to contain a stationary point. In dimension $d$, let $f=\mathbb{E}[F(\cdot;\xi)]$, assume $\mathbb{E}[\operatorname{Lip}(F(\cdot;\xi))^2]\le L_0^2$, and bound the initial objective...
