A web-based expert system for the early detection of pregnancy complications using the Certainty Factor method can assist the early identification of pregnancy complications and provide diagnostic confidence information as preliminary support before further medical examination.
Abstract
Pregnancy is an important phase that requires careful monitoring due to the risk of complications that may endanger the health of the mother and fetus. At Doa Ibu Persada Clinic, Langkat Regency, the identification of pregnancy complications is still conducted through anamnesis and direct medical examinations by healthcare personnel. The main problem is the absence of a screening system that can assist in identifying possible complications based on symptoms experienced by pregnant women. This study aims to develop a web-based expert system for the early detection of pregnancy complications using the Certainty Factor method. The system uses five types of complications, namely preeclampsia, anemia, gestational diabetes, pregnancy bleeding, and pregnancy infection, supported by 23 symptoms as the knowledge base. The Certainty Factor method combines expert confidence values with user confidence levels for selected symptoms to determine the confidence level of each diagnosis. The implementation using a patient case showed that preeclampsia obtained the highest Certainty Factor value of 0.9939 or 99.39%, making it the primary diagnosis. This result is consistent with the manual calculation conducted in the study. Therefore, the developed expert system can assist the early identification of pregnancy complications and provide diagnostic confidence information as preliminary support before further medical examination.

At the primary healthcare level, screening still relies on healthcare workers’ assessment of examination results. Therefore, a data-based approach is needed to support the identif...
