Results of using toothpaste containing zinc and a complex of seven medicinal herbs in adults with periodontal disease
Abstract
Introduction: Oral hygiene is important for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory periodontal diseases. The aim of the study was to determine the clinical efficiency of toothpaste containing zinc and a complex of seven medicinal herbs in adults with periodontal diseases. Research methodology: The results of using a toothpaste containing zinc citrate and a complex of seven medicinal herbs (chamomile, sage, mint, calendula, celandine, lavender, echinacea) for a month were studied in 19 patients aged 30–50 years. After 7, 14, and 30 days, the condition of the lips and oral mucosa, teeth (DMFT index, sensitivity to stimuli on a 10-point visual analog scale) and gums (GI, CPI), and oral hygiene (OHI-S) were assessed. At the last visit, patients were surveyed on self-assessment of the properties of toothpaste. The results of the research: A month later, a decrease in OHI-S, from (0.79 ± 0.11) to (0.18 ± 0.06), p 0.001, and an increase in the number of persons with good oral hygiene, from 42.1 to 89.5 %, p 0.05, were detected. The sensitivity of teeth to irritants decreased, especially to cold stimuli, from (2.60 ± 0.56) to (0.95 ± 0.37), p 0.05. There was a decrease in GI, from (1.55 ± 0.11) to (0.68 ± 0.12), p 0.001, and a reduction, according to CPI, in the number of sextants with signs of periodontal disease, from (5.10 ± 0.33) to (1.62 ± 0.52), p 0.001. No new carious lesions, changes in the lips and oral mucosa, or allergic reactions were detected. The patients rated highly the taste, smell, color, consistency, foaming, deodorizing and cleansing properties of the toothpaste, (7.60 ± 0.51) – (8.80 ± 0.20) points, and gums bleeding lessening (7.85 ± 0.45 points). Conclusion: The high efficiency of the use of the investigated toothpaste for reducing inflammation and bleeding of the gums, hygienic cleaning of teeth and giving freshness to breathing has been revealed; this allows us to recommend a toothpaste containing zinc and a complex of seven medicinal herbs for regular oral hygiene in adults with periodontal disease.
