Abstract
The selection of a study program is a strategic decision that influences academic success and future career orientation. In the context of technical teacher education, a shift in students’ career orientation away from the teaching profession has increasingly emerged. This study aims to analyze the relationship between internal and external factors and students’ interest in choosing the Electrical Engineering Education Study Program at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Padang, as well as its relationship with career orientation after graduation. This research employed a quantitative correlational design. The research subjects consisted of all 2025 cohort students of the Electrical Engineering Education Study Program, totaling 90 respondents, selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rho correlation test with a significance level of 0.05. The results indicate that both internal and external factors have a positive and significant relationship with students’ interest in choosing the study program. Furthermore, students’ interest is also significantly related to their career orientation after graduation. These findings suggest that students’ interest formation is influenced not only by personal factors but also by social and institutional environments, which subsequently shape their career orientation.
