Functionalization of 2D materials and of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) in particular is central for next generation devices and other applications. Here we study the effect of calcium dosing on the surfaces of clean

in ultrahigh vacuum by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. We find that Ca reacts with the chalcogens to

and reduces the remaining tungsten. Ca forms an overlayer on top and causes an outdiffusion of the chalcogen. The overlayer oxidizes easily. We obtained detailed understanding of the interactions of archetypal TMD with an abundant alkali-earth element, which expands our knowledge of metal-surface interactions and of surface manipulation of 2D materials.
Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) is renowned for its potential for atomic layer control, but unexpected growth mechanisms can potentially compromise this level of precision. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations to investigate the atomistic processes governing the MBE growth of perovskite SrTiO3 and Ruddle...

Amorphous solid-state electrolytes are attractive candidates for safe, high-energy-density all-solid-state batteries, yet their mechanical properties remain poorly understood from a computational perspective. Here, we investigate the elastic behavior of the recently discovered amorphous superionic Li-ion conductor LiTa...

(Sr214) and related iridates have emerged as key platforms for fundamental correlated-electron physics and for potential applications such as magnonics. Here, we report the epitaxial growth of high-quality Sr214 thin films using reactive off-axis sputtering. Conventional pulsed-laser de...

Muonium (Mu) is widely used as a model for isolated hydrogen in condensed matter, but whether its electronic state is truly equivalent to that of hydrogen remains to be tested with an orbital-sensitive probe. Here we use double electron-muon resonance to determine the electron $g$ values of the paramagnetic Mu center i...

The insulating state of one-dimensional Josephson junction (JJ) arrays is governed by collective charge dynamics and disorder-induced pinning, resulting in a finite critical voltage under dc bias. Here, we investigate the influence of fabrication-induced structural defects on the critical-voltage scaling of small-capac...
