Abstract

BIM-based design coordination plays an important role in identifying and resolving conflicts between disciplines, contributing to the quality and efficiency of project development in the AEC industry. Despite technological advances, challenges that affect the effectiveness of this process still persist, especially in collaborative contexts. This paper aims to identify and categorize the main challenges of BIM-based design coordination in building projects through a case study. The research adopts a qualitative approach, based on interviews conducted with 12 professionals working in a firm specialized in design coordination. The data were analyzed through a systematic examination of the responses, which enabled the identification of six categories of challenges: (i) multidisciplinary integration and collaboration, (ii) information management and communication, (iii) BIM maturity and training, (iv) process structuring and management, (v) modeling and information representation, and (vi) operational and technological aspects. The results indicate that these challenges go beyond technological limitations, involving organizational, process-related, and human factors. As a contribution, the study presents a categorized framework that supports a better understanding and improvement of BIM-based design coordination processes.
