Abstract

High-energy lithium metal batteries are promising for space, polar, deep-sea, and other extreme environments, but their operation is constrained by temperature-sensitive ion transport, Li+ solvation, and interfacial chemistry. A solvation-equilibrium-locked electrolyte (SELE) is reported by combining dimethyl sulfite (DMS), a low-freezing weakly solvating solvent, with Pyr13DFOB (1-methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium difluoro(oxalato)borate) as an ionic-liquid co-solvent. Cooperative ion-dipole and weak C-H⋯O interactions between DMS and Pyr13 + regulate the free-solvent reservoir, while TFSI- (bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) and DFOB- enrich the primary Li+ coordination shell. Variable-temperature 7Li NMR, Raman, and molecular dynamics simulations show that solvent-separated ion pairs, contact ion pairs, and aggregates remain nearly invariant from -60°C to 60°C, unlike the strongly temperature-responsive Pyr13DFOB-free electrolyte. This locked anion-rich solvation structure reduces solvent coordination around Li+, mitigates solvent-derived interfacial decomposition and gas evolution, and promotes LiF- and borate-rich interphases on Li metal and NMC811. Consequently, Li||NMC811 cells deliver discharge capacity at -85°C and operate up to 120°C, while pouch cells remain functional after cooling to -122.9°C. A 6.6 Ah Li||Ni90 pouch cell further achieves 565 Wh kg-1 under lean-electrolyte conditions, establishing solvation-equilibrium locking as a molecular design principle for lithium metal batteries operating over a broad temperature range.

Anion-participating solvation enables compositionally graded interphases for durable subzero lithium-ion batteries

Low-temperature operation remains a critical bottleneck for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), since the coupled limitations in Li+ transport, desolvation and interfacial stability severely undermine energy delivery and long-term cyclability. Here, rather than merely relying on low-freezing-point solvents to improve electro...

Anion-solvent synergistic modulation enables high-entropy solvation structures for ultra-low-temperature and high-rate lithium ion batteries.

Ultra-low-temperature operation of Li-ion batteries (LIBs) remains notably challenging because conventional carbonate electrolytes suffer from high Li+ desolvation barriers and large interfacial impedance, leading to rapid capacity fade. Here, we report a high-entropy solvation structure contributed by the synergistic...

Steric Tuning Enables Room-Temperature Coordination Ionic Liquids for Zn-Metal Batteries.

The pursuit of high-energy-density batteries requires molten-salt-like electrolytes, but conventional systems often suffer from high viscosity or elevated operating temperature. Herein, we report a class of room-temperature coordination ionic liquids (CILs) constructed through well-defined coordination between Zn2+ and...

Anion-Cation Targeted Regulation Enables Ultrafast and Stable Sodium Metal Batteries at Low Temperatures.

Anion-dominated solvation and artificial interfacial engineering have been intensively pursued for low-temperature sodium-metal batteries (SMBs), yet they face constraints from temperature-sensitive solvation dynamics and interfacial control. Here we propose anion-cation-targeted regulation via Sn(OTf)2 that simultaneo...

Watermelon-like solvation structure enables ultra-low-concentration electrolytes for high-rate and low-temperature lithium metal batteries.

Electrolyte engineering is crucial for developing high-rate and low-temperature lithium-metal batteries. Conventional carbonate-based electrolytes have achieved broad success in commercial batteries, but their high freezing point, high viscosity, and strong Li+ solvation ability severely limit Li+ transport and interfa...

A Three-Descriptor Framework for Solvation Design of Low-Temperature Electrolytes in Lithium Batteries.

Low-temperature operation of lithium-metal batteries is limited by kinetic penalties in electrolytes, yet electrolyte discovery for subzero operation remains largely empirical, lacking a predictive basis linking molecular structure to Li+-solvent interactions. Here, we establish a three-descriptor topology-electronic c...
