Examining the Relationship Between Pesticide Use Levels and Infant Mortality: Correlational and Spatial Analysis by Province (2020–2024)

Abstract

Numerous studies conducted worldwide have highlighted the harmful effects of excessive pesticide use in weed control on human health. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between pesticide use levels and infant number of deaths in different provinces of Türkiye. Pesticide use reports from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry for the years 2020 and 2024, and infant mortality data by province from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) were used. The analysis of the data was conducted utilising SPSS, Jamovi, and Jasp software. Spearman's correlation analysis was employed to ascertain the statistical relationship between the data. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered to be significant, and the findings were visualised by creating geographic maps using QGIS and GeoDa software to demonstrate spatial overlap. The analyses revealed a moderate, positive, and statistically significant correlation between pesticide use at the provincial level and all infant mortality periods in both years examined. Geographic distribution maps demonstrated that the Aegean, Mediterranean, and Southeastern Anatolia regions, where pesticide use was most intensive, also exhibited the highest infant mortality rates, thereby providing spatial evidence for this correlation. An examination of the four-year period reveals a concurrent increase in pesticide utilisation and a decrease in infant number of deaths. The significant positive correlation obtained indicates that environmental pesticide exposure, along with other determinants such as socioeconomic status, is a potential risk factor contributing to infant mortality.

Spatial and Environmental Analysis of Malaria Occurrence in Southern Edo Households

Household morbidity and mortality figures on malaria clearly shows that it is a disease not to be taken lightly. The tendency to trivialise the disease as common and easily treatable may account for the high global mortality rates of malaria amongst households. The major aim of the study is to investigate various environmental factors, (vegetation, waste dump sites, and stagnant water pools), as predictors of malaria prevalence in Southern Edo State. The multi-level regression analysis was used to explore the various environmental predictors of malaria. Approximately 630 households were selected from among 21 communities in the 7 Local Government Areas of the study area, using a systematic random sampling technique. The cross-sectional and longitudinal survey methods were employed to elicit information for the study, while data were analysed using the IBM SPSS statistical software, version 24. The study revealed that vegetation around households is a significant predictor of malaria outcomes in the study area, while waste dump sites and stagnant pools around households were not so significant. The multi-level regression analysis of environmental variables indicates that, among all factors tested, the presence of vegetation shows a positive and statistically significant association with malaria occurrence among households in the study area, with a p-value of less than 0.000. This indicates that households with more vegetation are likely to experience higher malaria incidence in the region. Therefore, significant measures to reduce vegetation around households through regular weeding, fumigation, etc., in the study area is essential in curbing malaria occurrence in Southern Edo State.

Geospatial mapping, trends, and factors associated with tuberculosis treatment interruption: an ecological study

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the spatial and temporal patterns and factors associated with tuberculosis treatment interruption in Brazil from 2010 to 2020. Method: Ecological study using geoprocessing. The Joinpoint method was used for temporal analysis. Spatial autocorrelation and scan statistics identified clusters. Spatial and non-spatial regression models, considering p < .05, detected factors associated with the outcome. Results: A stationary trend in tuberculosis treatment interruption was observed across the country, with increases in the Central-West and North regions. Associated socioeconomic indicators included the Gini index, household density > 2, retreatment rate, social vulnerability index, illiteracy rate, percentage of individuals in extreme poverty, and Family Health Strategy coverage. Conclusion: Treatment interruption showed a stationary trend. Spatial regression showed that socioeconomic vulnerability indicators influence the outcome, positively or negatively, depending on the region, which calls for intensified prevention and control efforts in those areas.

Assessment of the Effect of Soil Conservation Practices on Sustainable Crop Production in Ngororero, Rwanda

Aims: This study assessed the effectiveness of soil conservation practices (SCPs) in controlling soil erosion and examined their contribution to sustainable crop production, using the Food Basket Sites (FoBaSi) programme of Ngororero District, Rwanda, as a case study. Study Design: A cross-sectional, descriptive-explanatory research design combining quantitative and qualitative methods was adopted. Place and Duration of Study: The study was conducted between 2025 and 2026 across 50 Food Basket Sites in the 13 sectors of Ngororero District, an East African highland agricultural landscape in Western Province, Rwanda. Methodology: Cross-sectional mixed-methods was employed for the study of 367 farming households (Yamane's formula, stratified sampling) plus 39 key informants across Ngororero District. Data came from household surveys, field observations, interviews, and secondary records. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple regression in SPSS; qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Results: Radical terracing (85%) and progressive terracing (78%) were the most widely adopted SCPs, whereas cover cropping (45%) and water harvesting (40%) showed relatively low adoption. Indicators of soil erosion remained prevalent, including bare soil patches (70%), rills (65%), and gullies (40%), suggesting inadequate maintenance and limited integration of biological conservation measures. Soil conservation practices were significantly and positively associated with crop yield, yield stability, land productivity, and household food security (p < 0.01). Multiple regression analysis showed that terracing, agroforestry, mulching, and cover cropping explained 68% of the variation in sustainable crop production (R = 0.825, R² = 0.680, Adjusted R² = 0.676; F (4,362) = 45.2, p < 0.001), with terracing (β = 0.45) and agroforestry (β = 0.35) being the strongest predictors. Furthermore, 80% of farmers reported increased and more stable crop yields, 65% reported higher farm income, and 74.1% perceived improved resilience to climate variability. Conclusion: Integrated implementation of structural and biological soil conservation practices significantly enhances sustainable crop production despite persistent erosion challenges. Strengthening maintenance, expanding biological conservation measures, and improving extension support and financial access are essential to increase agricultural productivity and climate resilience in Rwanda's highland Food Basket Sites.

Spatiotemporal dynamics and ecological determinants of cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Errachidia Province, southeastern Morocco: A 16-year municipality-level analysis with SARIMA forecasting.

Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne parasitic disease transmitted by female sandflies of the genus Phlebotomus and affects approximately 1.2 million people annually in more than 90 countries worldwide. Morocco remains one of the most affected countries in North Africa, where the disease continues to represent a major public health concern. This study aimed to analyze the spatial and temporal trends of leishmaniasis incidence across all municipalities of Errachidia Province between 2010 and 2025 and to assess the influence of ecological, demographic, and socio-economic factors on its distribution. Also, the study aimed to predict the monthly CL cases using the Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) model. Epidemiological data on parasitologically confirmed cases obtained from the Errachidia Provincial Health Delegation were processed using geographic information system (GIS) tools and statistical methods to explore spatial patterns and correlations with environmental and socio-demographic variables. The models are trained and evaluated using monthly CL cases collected from 2010 to 2025, with the optimal model selected based on Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). During 16-years study period, 7034 cases were recorded in Errachidia Province, with the highest incidence reported in 2010 (860 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). Overall, the incidence showed marked temporal fluctuations but demonstrated a general decreasing trend over the study period. A pronounced spatial heterogeneity was observed between rural municipalities (Sid Ali, Melaab, and Ferkla) and urban municipalities (Errachidia, Arfoud, and Goulmima) (p < 0.01). The disease was slightly more frequent in females (54.41%) than in males (45.59%), and a significant difference was observed among age groups (p = 0.019), with the 0-9 and 10-19-year groups being the most affected. Seasonal analysis revealed a peak incidence during winter. In addition, higher incidence was associated with low- to medium-altitude municipalities, while no significant association was observed with poverty or vulnerability indices. The SARIMA (0,0,1)12 model demonstrated the best predictive performance. These findings highlight the heterogeneity and ecological determinants of leishmaniasis in southeastern Morocco and may support targeted surveillance and control strategies in high-risk areas.

Analysis of morbidity among the child population of the Gomel region

Relevance . Examining spatial and temporal variations in child morbidity rates allows for the timely identification of problematic situations in this domain and the concentration of efforts on their prevention. The purpose of the study : is to analyze morbidity indicators of the child population aged 0–17 years in the Gomel Region for the period 2014–2023. Materials and methods . The study used data from annual reports on child morbidity in the Gomel Region for 2014–2023. The research employed analytical and statistical methods, including the calculation of intensive and extensive indicators of primary and overall morbidity, along with an analysis of their dynamics. Student’s t-test was used to assess the statistical significance of differences; differences were considered statistically significant at p ≤ 0.05. Results . During the analyzed period, a statistically significant increase in both primary and overall morbidity among the child population of the Gomel Region was recorded, particularly in 2023 compared to 2020. Respiratory diseases rank first in the nosological structure of both primary and overall morbidity. Diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue occupy the second rank in the primary morbidity structure and the third in the overall morbidity structure. Infectious and parasitic diseases rank third in the primary morbidity structure and fifth in the overall morbidity structure. In the overall morbidity structure, diseases of the eye and adnexa are in second place, whereas in the primary morbidity structure they rank fifth. Injuries, poisonings, and certain other consequences of external causes hold the fourth position in the primary morbidity structure, while diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue occupy the fourth position in overall morbidity. The peak of child morbidity in the Gomel Region was noted in 2021, which was driven by an almost twofold rise in infectious and parasitic diseases, presumably due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion . The data obtained can be used to develop a set of measures for the prevention, early diagnosis of diseases and borderline conditions, as well as for organizing dispensary observation of children, including those who have had COVID-19.
