Abstract
Measurements of x-ray absorption/opacity in ionized plasmas at the National Ignition Facility in experiments with high neutron yields require large detector standoff distances, motivating advances in opacity spectrometer design. We propose a spectrometer in which x rays first reflect from a sagittally focusing mirror with a variable-radius sagittal profile. The mirror sets the sagittal imaging condition so that, after subsequent reflection from a meridionally bent crystal, the x rays form a sagittally focused spectrum at the detector plane. The crystal provides spectral dispersion in the meridional direction, while sagittal focusing by the mirror enables 1D imaging of an emitting (or backlit) object. The basic characteristics of the spectrometer are described analytically. The imaging performance of a selected high-magnification design is studied numerically via ray tracing. We show that a large spectral range (Emax - Emin)/E0 ≃ 1/2, high spectral resolving power E/ΔE ≃ 1000, high magnification, M ≃ 10, and 1D spatial resolution of better than 100 μm can be achieved simultaneously.
X-ray scattering is a powerful diagnostic for characterizing warm-dense matter, as the scattering spectrum simultaneously encodes details of the plasma thermodynamic state, ionization, and electron correlations. However, scattering measurements from laser-driven samples must contend with not only a short-lived and rapi...

Measurements of x-ray transmission in a high-temperature Al plasma over the 1.4–2.1 keV photon energy range are reported, which is driven by axial x-ray radiation from Z-pinch–driven dynamic hohlraum on 10 MA facility in China. Two identical bent convex cylindrical KAP crystal spectrometers are deployed at ±8° along tw...

High-resolution x-ray radiography (HRXR) is a critical diagnostic tool for studying high-energy-density plasmas in large laser facilities such as the National Ignition Facility, the Laser Mega Joule, and Omega Extended Performance. However, geometric constraints in these facilities pose significant challenges for exper...

Over the last few years, the beam coherence produced by modern synchrotrons remarkably pushed the limits of imaging. In the soft x-ray regime, full-field lens-less resonant Bragg diffraction was proved, naturally offering new opportunities in the investigation of correlated electron materials. On antiferromagnetic mate...

Focusing hard X-rays above 80 keV is challenging for grazing-incidence optics. Laue lenses offer an alternative based on crystal diffraction. We assess a lens based on Silicon Laue Components (SiLCs), consisting of stacked silicon plates, for polarimetry of accreting stellar-mass black holes and strongly magnetized neu...

We investigate chromatic aberrations in x-ray crystal imagers. For on-axis point-to-point imaging, second-order astigmatism can be eliminated by the optimal choice of meridional and sagittal radii, but higher-order aberrations generally remain. In crystals and other diffractive reflectors these aberrations are termed c...
