Deaf-Friendly Educational Spaces: A Case-Based Architectural Study

Abstract

Deafness profoundly influences how individuals experience, communicate with, and interact with the world around them. For many, this is a reality that profoundly shapes their experiences and interactions. Deafness is not merely a limitation; it represents a unique journey filled with rich communication, vibrant expression, and deep connections. Contrary to common perceptions, the world of the deaf is alive with visual language, where every gesture and sign conveys meaning, emotion, and a sense of community. This study explores the architectural parameters that shape spatial accessibility, visual connectivity, and sensory legibility for Deaf and hard-of-hearing users in educational environments. Employing a comparative case-study, the research analyzes spatial configurations, circulation geometries, material, and lighting conditions at Gallaudet University (Washington, D.C., USA), Isinya Boarding School for the Deaf (Kajiado County, Kenya)and Central Secondary School for the Deaf(Naxal, Kathmandu, Nepal). Field observations in Nepali Deaf schools further expose systemic gaps in space and proximity, sensory reach, mobility and proximity, light and color, acoustics. The findings demonstrate that design interventions such as U-shaped classroom arrangements, widened and visually continuous corridors, acoustically absorptive surfaces, and diffused illumination significantly enhance visual communication, safety, and spatial comprehension for Deaf users. Design standards from Deaf Space guidelines, Universal Design principles, ADA design standards, International Building Code provisions, and National Building Codes of India and Nepal, the study formulates a set of context-responsive design recommendations applicable to low-resource educational settings. The article contributes to the theoretical and practical discourse on Deaf-friendly architecture by proposing an evidence-based framework for integrating sensory-oriented design within Nepal’s evolving educational infrastructure.

Access as Practice: Deaf-Tech Interaction in Motion

This analysis reveals that Deaf–Tech interaction is better understood as socio-technical practices centered on deaf lived experiences, and reframes accessibility not as a fixed property of specific tools or environments, but as a set of emergent, embodied, situated, and relational practices shaped through everyday enga...

Seeing the Voice, Preserving the Self: A Participatory Design Approach to Deaf-Centric Text-to-Speech

We describe a participatory design approach toward developing Deaf-centric text-to-speech (TTS) technologies. While TTS is growing rapidly in the mainstream, it has received little attention to date in the deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) technology space. Critical problems have remained unaddressed for DHH users, includ...

Colombian Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals' Experiences in Physical Education: A Retrospective Study.

While research on disabled people's experiences in physical education has expanded, limited attention has been given to other geographical regions, including Latin America. This study examined the experiences of Colombian Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals in physical education. Using a descriptive qualitative design...

Eyes, Ears, Mouth, and Presence: Designing a Human-Centered Hybrid Classroom for Natural Interaction

Hybrid classrooms that feel genuinely human remain difficult to achieve despite sustained post-pandemic investment. Most current solutions still privilege content delivery over social presence, with remote participants positioned as observers rather than participants in a shared learning space. This paper presents the...

Deaf children's communication needs in social environments: A hearing perspective

Communication is a fundamental need that shapes children's cognitive, social, and academic development, yet deaf children often face communication barriers because most interactions in their environment rely on spoken language. These barriers depend not only on the child's abilities but also on the readiness of the hea...

Bigger than the EAR BOX: A Theory-Grounded Review of XR Accessibility Research for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Communities

Extended Reality (XR) technologies have received growing attention in accessibility research involving Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) communities. Yet less attention has been given to the assumptions shaping this work. We present a theory-grounded review of an ACM-published corpus of XR research involving DHH users. Dr...
