Abstract
Rural communities mobilize cultural knowledge and social relationships to sustain livelihoods under economic, climatic, and demographic change, yet the benefits of these resources are unevenly distributed. This review examined how local culture and bonding, bridging, and linking social capital relate to rural economic resilience and community adaptation. A narrative thematic synthesis was organized around a reported register of 137 study entries, with an intended publication scope of 2016–2026. The analysis distinguished collective action, livelihood adaptation, cultural revitalization, and entrepreneurial diversification. The findings suggest that close relationships support reciprocal assistance, while connections across social groups and institutional levels can widen access to knowledge, finance, services, and markets. These contributions depend on organizational arrangements, material resources, and power relations. Cultural identity can motivate participation but may also constrain change or reinforce exclusion. An interpretive framework links cultural meanings, network configurations, and organizational mediation to incremental, transitional, and transformative responses. Recounting the register identifies 133 entries within the intended period and four earlier entries requiring separate classification. Missing search chronology, screening records, and study-level appraisal limit reproducibility and prevent quality-weighted conclusions. The review therefore offers a provisional synthesis rather than a verified estimate of effectiveness. Rural development policy should combine culturally grounded participation with accountable external connections and explicit assessment of who receives lasting livelihood benefits.
