Abstract

This study quantitatively evaluates the combined effects of moisture content, compaction coefficient, and the number of freeze-thaw cycles on the deformation properties of clayey soils. The study was conducted under laboratory conditions. Soil samples with varying moisture contents ranging from 14% to 25% and compaction coefficients from 0.93 to 1.06 were prepared and subjected to varying numbers of freeze-thaw cycles (1–6 cycles). Control samples not subjected to freeze-thaw cycles were also tested. All samples were tested in a compression tester with loads ranging from 0 to 0.6 MPa. Based on the processing and analysis of test reports, dependences of sample deformations on load were obtained for different combinations of initial soil sample properties. It was noted that all the factors considered influence the increase in deformations, and the relationship between deformations and moisture content for all compaction coefficients considered increases with increasing freezing cycles, while the relationship between deformations and compaction coefficients decreases across the entire moisture content range.

Study on the mechanical properties of coarse-grained soils with different fine-grained contents under freeze-thaw cycles

This research analyzed the impact of fine-grained content on the mechanical characteristics of coarse-grained soil in the river valley region of southeastern Xizang under freeze-thaw cycle circumstances via indoor tests, and modified the Duncan-Zhang model based on the test results. A total of six different coarse-grai...

Mechanical Properties and Freeze-Thaw Resistance of Modified Portland Cement-Stabilized Soil for Road Engineering

Subgrade soil is related to the load on the upper part of the road, and its properties will affect the road surface conditions. Frost-thaw action will damage the soil in cold regions. This study focuses on the fine-grained sand in Jilin affected by seasonal frost-thaw, and explores the effects of mixing amount (0% - 6%...

Direct Shear Behavior of Silty-Loam–Concrete Interfaces Subjected to Freeze–Thaw Cycling: An Experimental and DIC Investigation

Freeze–thaw cycling can alter soil–structure interface response in seasonally frozen regions. This study investigated the direct-shear behavior of a commercially sourced silty-loam–concrete interface subjected to sealed freeze–thaw cycling. A 25-condition mixed-level design based on the standard L25(56) orthogonal arra...

Impacts of gravels on the moisture evaporation and desiccation cracks in soil

Under extreme arid conditions, soil loses moisture and forms cracks, which significantly affect their mechanical and hydraulic properties (e.g., shear strength, soil structure, and hydraulic behavior). Natural soils commonly contain gravels. However, research on the effects of gravels on moisture evaporation and desicc...

Effects of Moisture Content, Compaction Energy, Particle Gradation, and Rainfall-Induced Wetting on the Compaction and Settlement Behavior of Coarse-Grained Soils in High Embankments: A Malaysian Case Study

High embankments constructed from coarse-grained soils play an important role in transportation and infrastructure development, particularly in projects requiring substantial elevation changes. The deformation behavior of such embankments is governed by the combined effects of particle gradation, moisture condition, co...
