Abstract
Bartonella are intracellular Gram-negative blood-borne bacteria capable of infecting a wide range of hosts, primarily mammals and birds. They are responsible for emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases characterized by persistent intraerythrocytic bacteremia in mammals. Out of 49 species described, 13 presents zoonotic potential. This review aimed to update the current knowledge on the occurrence, distribution, and genetic diversity of Bartonella in domestic animals, wild mammals and birds, and ectoparasites in Brazil. A total of 72 scientific articles published between 2007 and 2026 were included. The available information indicates that the Southeastern and Central-Western regions of Brazil account for most reports of Bartonella in animals and ectoparasites, whereas the Northern and Northeastern regions remain comparatively understudied. Overall, studies investigating Bartonella in Brazil have become increasingly frequent and geographically widespread over the years. Although some investigations rely on single-gene analyses, most employ multi-locus sequence analysis and phylogenetic reconstruction, providing stronger evidence for species identification and diversity. In contrast, relatively few studies have incorporated whole-genome sequencing or comprehensive phenotypic and biochemical characterization through bacterial isolation and blood culture. Future research should prioritize advanced genomic approaches and bacterial isolation to improve our understanding of the diversity, evolution, and epidemiology of Bartonella circulating in Brazil.
Simple Summary Wild carnivores provide valuable opportunities to monitor the circulation of vector-borne pathogens that may affect animal and human health. In this study, spleen samples from 690 wild carnivores (canids and mustelids) collected in northwestern Italy were screened for tick-borne protozoa (Babesia, Theile...

Ehrlichia is a genus of Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacteria that causes ehrlichiosis in a wide range of domestic and wild animals and is primarily transmitted by ticks. Although Ehrlichia species have been reported in numerous vertebrate hosts, their occurrence in bats remains poorly understood. Thailand, lo...
Corsica is a mountainous French island in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea characterized by a wide diversity of natural environments where many interactions between humans, domestic animals and wild fauna occur. Gastrointestinal parasitism is a major concern for livestock productivity. Among these parasites, Cryptosp...

Wild animals play a crucial role in the maintenance of tick-borne pathogens, acting as reservoir and sentinel hosts within natural ecosystems. The ongoing expansion of tick populations across Europe has intensified the circulation of zoonotic tick-borne pathogens, including Anaplasma phagocytophilum. Although the epide...

Ctenocephalides felis felis is a widespread ectoparasite of dogs and cats and has been associated with transmission of several microorganisms of veterinary and public health relevance. This study investigated the molecular occurrence, genetic diversity, and co-occurrence patterns of Bartonella spp., Rickettsia spp., an...

Haemosporidian (“malaria”) parasites are a diverse group of vector-borne apicomplexan parasites that infect a wide range of vertebrate hosts, including humans. Bats harbour a remarkable diversity of haemosporidians and are considered important hosts in the evolution of mammalian haemosporidian lineages, yet parasite di...
