After some personal recollections of Jean-Pierre Kahane, this paper gives a gentle introduction to the Gleason-Kahane-Zelazko theorem. The theorem states that a normalised complex-linear functional on a unital complex Banach algebra is multiplicative whenever it does not vanish on invertible elements. Neither continuity of the functional nor commutativity of the algebra is assumed. We give a detailed account of three proofs: the original argument of Gleason and, independently, Kahane and Zelazko; the polynomial proof of Roitman and Sternfeld; and a proof by the author. We explain the complex analysis behind each: a special case of Hadamard's factorisation theorem, a polynomial argument using the fundamental theorem of algebra, and the P\'olya-Saxer theorem on zero-free entire functions and their derivatives. The elementary entire-function lemma needed for the first proof is proved in full; the P\'olya-Saxer theorem is used without proof. We give full details of the algebraic argument common to the three proofs, which deduces multiplicativity from the preservation of squares, including the non-commutative case. We then discuss applications and counterexamples, and present an extension to Ransford's generalised spectra using the Roitman--Sternfeld argument. We conclude with a brief guide to the more recent literature.
This paper is motivated by the recent work of Adamczewski and Faverjon [5], who established the algebraic independence of values of Mahler functions satisfying linear functional equations. While their work is a landmark result, some proofs are long and complex. The primary aim of this paper is to simplify those proofs...

We revisit the classical Siegel-Shidlovskii method in transcendental number theory from a new perspective, in which functional relations play a central role. Within a single self-contained framework, we recover the foundational results in the theory of E-functions, including the Siegel-Shidlovskii theorem, Beukers'lift...
A classical theorem due to Gleason, Kahane, and Zelazko states that every complex unital Banach algebra is ordinary, meaning that any linear functional mapping elements into their spectrum is a character. While Roitman and Sternfeld extended this property to algebras with bounded spectra-showing in particular that the...
In this paper we prove a transfer principle for Banach algebras and use it to show that, for local identities of product type, the algebraic hypotheses of the commutativity theorems of Yood type are superfluous. Such theorems assume an algebraic identity only on a small part of the algebra and only with an exponent tha...
We develop a new approach to the Joint Intersectivity Conjecture of Bergelson, Leibman, and Lesigne for commuting transformations. The conjecture asserts that the necessary divisibility condition is the only obstruction to polynomial multiple recurrence and, consequently, to the multidimensional polynomial Szemer\'edi...
This paper provides a human digestion of a proof of the spectral isometry conjecture for $C^*$-algebras found by GPT-6 Astra. We prove that every unital surjective complex-linear spectral isometry between unital $C^*$-algebras is a Jordan isomorphism. Without the assumption that the map preserves the identity, it is a...
