Evidence suggesting a single generator of the RewP is generated in the caudal ACC is supported, supporting the role of caudal ACC in motivation of extended behaviors.

Abstract

The reward positivity (RewP) is an event-related brain potential (ERP) component associated with feedback and goal completion. Although the component is said to be generated in anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), this inference is disputed because of the inverse problem. Recent intracranial electroencephalogram (EEG) current source density analyses provided direct evidence that the RewP is generated in caudal ACC, specifically Brodmann areas 24c’ and 32’. To further test this hypothesis, we examined the effects of damage to frontal cortex damage on RewP amplitude. Scalp EEG was recorded from 68 stroke patients with frontal lesions while they performed a trial-and-error guessing task used to elicit a canonical RewP. Non-parametric voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping revealed that damage to Brodmann areas 24c’ and 32’ significantly attenuated RewP amplitude. These results align with evidence suggesting a single generator of the RewP in the caudal ACC, supporting the role of caudal ACC in motivation of extended behaviors.

Oscillatory activity in rostral middle frontal gyrus encodes proactive response restraint in cortico-subcortical motor control network

Electrophysiologic activity in multiple cortical and subthalamic nucleus (STN) regions in 17 patients with Parkinson’s disease is studied to conclude that communication within the motor control network is frequency dependent, with key nodes promoting specific functions.

Prefrontal cortical morphometric covariance and cognitive task performance in healthy young adults: an exploratory analysis of Human Connectome Project data

The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is implicated in many cognitive tasks, including working memory, reward-based decision-making, executive control, and metacognition. This exploratory analysis investigated whether individual expression of PFC cortical thickness and surface area covariance components is associated with cogn...

Real-time fMRI feedback guides self-generated cognition toward upregulation of hippocampal activity.

The hippocampus is crucial for mental time travel and visuospatial processing, with dysfunction having major implications for aging, stress resilience, and mental health. While external neurostimulation methods can modulate hippocampal activity, effective real-world interventions require flexible, self-guided approache...

Brain Dynamics Underlying Reaching Movements Under Uncertainty

Motor responses are influenced by inferred predictability, but it remains unclear how uncertainty, or its inverse, precision, is encoded within motor control networks. In this study, we combined computational modeling of reaching movement response speed with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We used a cuein...

Disrupting the Right Inferior Frontal Gyrus Increases ‘Social Brain’ Activity During Emotion Recognition

Neuroimaging studies have identified a specialised social brain network that supports emotion recognition and social cognition. This network performs a range of functions that include facial expression recognition and inferring the mental states of others. Studies of neuropsychological patients report that damage to th...
