Experimental and numerical investigation of free surface formation in an unbaffled stirred tank

Abstract

The aim of this study was to conduct an experimental and numerical analysis of the hydrodynamics of twophase flow in an unbaffled mixer equipped with a Rushton turbine. The analysis revealed clear limitations of RANS-based turbulence models under strong, axially symmetric swirling flow conditions. All analyzed models in this group (k-", SST k-!, RSM) significantly overestimated the power number, with relative errors ranging from 95% to over 119%, which limits their utility as predictive tools in engineering practice. Furthermore, they failed to correctly represent velocity field structures, and predictions of vortex shape and depth showed poor correlation with experimental results. In contrast, the LES model demonstrated clear superiority: it predicted mixing power with a minimal error of 3:4% and velocity distributions with high precision. Additionally, it accurately reproduced the geometry of the vortex funnel, confirming its suitability for modeling flows with strong turbulence anisotropy and a dynamic free surface.

Effect of Casting Speed on Multiphase Flow and Slag Entrainment Caused by a Triple‐Port Submerged Entry Nozzle

In this study, a transient three‐dimensional numerical model is developed. The model employs large eddy simulation (LES) to resolve unsteady turbulent flows, the Smagorinsky–Lilly model to resolve sub‐grid scale structures, and the volume of fluid (VOF) method to track the motion of three continuous phases (air, slag...

Experimental and Computational Investigation of Vortex Formation in a Single-Stage Rushton Turbine Stirred Tank Reactor Under Standard and Non-Standard Baffle Configurations

An understanding of vortex formation in stirred tank reactors is of great importance, as in some processes, vortices are necessary for a chemical reaction to take place at all or to be accelerated, whilst in other processes, vortex formation is undesirable and can cause high mechanical stresses on the stirrer shaft, se...

Numerical investigation of supersonic jet using a two-fluid turbulence model

In the present work, numerical simulation of an axisymmetric jet at a Mach number of 1.63 under temperature-matched conditions was performed using an improved two-fluid turbulence model. The proposed model includes an additional transport equation for the relative molar velocity, which enables a more accurate represent...

Experimental and numerical investigation on dynamic flow separation during water-entry of an open cavity

In this paper, the water-entry behavior of an open cylindrical cavity is investigated by laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. Laboratory experiments are conducted in a water flume, with high-speed imaging used to capture cavity bubble evolution across a range of entry velocities, corresponding to Froude nu...
