Abstract

The study evaluated the antifungal activity of Bryophyllum pinnatum leaf extracts against the plant pathogens Moniliophthora roreri and Rhizopus stolonifer. Aqueous, ether, and alcoholic extracts were obtained and subjected to phytochemical screening to identify secondary metabolites. The aqueous and alcoholic extracts exhibited greater diversity of compounds, notably flavonoids, tannins, amino acids, reducing sugars, and phenolic compounds. The aqueous extract contained 176.46 mg/mL of total solids and 246.32 mg EAG/100 g of polyphenols. Its antifungal activity was evaluated at concentrations of 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100 mg/mL by measuring the mycelial growth diameter. Analysis of variance revealed a significant effect of concentration on fungal growth (p < 0.001), while the type of fungus did not show significant differences (p = 0.0552). Concentrations of 75 and 100 mg/mL produced the greatest inhibition, with no significant differences between them. The results demonstrate the antifungal potential of B. pinnatum and support its study as a natural alternative for managing phytopathogens of agricultural importance.
