TL;DR
The findings suggest that the quality of life of asthma patients in advanced healthcare facilities is influenced by three key modifiable factors: asthma control, comorbidities, and adherence.
Abstract
Objective: The quality of life of asthma patients is influenced by various complex factors that can vary by region. This study aims to identify the factors most influencing the quality of life of outpatients with asthma in advanced healthcare facilities.
Methods: This study was conducted at two regional public hospitals in Sumatra Province. The study involved 123 subjects who met the inclusion criteria: they were aged 18 y or older and had been receiving inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) or oral corticosteroids (OCS) for at least 3 mo. The study instruments used observation sheets, the MMAS-8 questionnaire, the ACT questionnaire, and the AQLQ. Data were analysed univariately, bivariately, and multivariately.
Results: Overall, 77.2% of patients had a poor-to-moderate quality of life. Factors associated with good quality of life include controlled asthma (OR = 4.88; 95% CI 1.53–15.54), no comorbidities (OR = 3.33; 95% CI 1.28–8.63), and high adherence (OR = 3.07; 95% CI 1.19–7.93).
Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the quality of life of asthma patients in advanced healthcare facilities is influenced by three key modifiable factors: asthma control, comorbidities, and adherence. Addressing comorbidities and implementing structured pharmacist interventions tailored to specific barriers for everyone are expected to improve the quality of life of asthma patients in advanced healthcare facilities.
