These findings demonstrate that P. cirratum maintains compartmentalized prokaryotic and viral communities through niche-specific abiotic filtering and biotic selection, promoting nutrient acquisition and stress resilience in bryophyte-dominated ecosystems.
Abstract
Summary Ecological niche partitioning shapes microbial communities in terrestrial mosses, yet its underlying mechanisms and associated viral diversity remain poorly understood. Here, we characterized prokaryotic and viral communities in the rhizosphere soil (Rs) and endophytic niche (Pc) of Pogonatum cirratum using amplicon and metagenomic sequencing. Rs exhibited higher species richness, co-dominated by Pseudomonadota, Acidobacteriota, and Actinomycetota, whereas Pc was dominated by Pseudomonadota (81.13%) but showed greater functional diversity. Source tracking revealed that 10.57% of Pc taxa originated from Rs, suggesting host-mediated filtration of beneficial microbes. Deterministic processes predominantly governed prokaryotic assembly, with iron cycling accounting for ∼14% of total metabolic potential in both niches. Rs contained more biosynthetic gene clusters, while viral communities diverged in taxonomy and auxiliary metabolic genes profiles. These findings demonstrate that P. cirratum maintains compartmentalized prokaryotic and viral communities through niche-specific abiotic filtering and biotic selection, promoting nutrient acquisition and stress resilience in bryophyte-dominated ecosystems.
Habitat transition can reorganize plant-associated microbial communities, yet whether rhizosphere bacteria and fungi respond similarly to the transition from native to introduced habitats remains unclear. Here, we investigated this question in the endangered plant Paeonia ludlowii by comparing rhizosphere bacterial and...
Mangroves persist under strong environmental constraints with support from microbes. Although microbial communities differ among mangrove compartments, their assembly mechanisms and compartment-specific functional signatures remain poorly resolved. Here, we combine peptide nucleic acid–clamping coupled with 16S rRNA ge...

Recurrent cyanobacterial enrichment in plastisphere communities is demonstrated and co-occurrence patterns between cyanobacteria and heterotrophic taxa are identified, generating hypotheses regarding possible phototroph-heterotroph linkages on plastic surfaces that warrant experimental investigation.

Findings demonstrate that plant ontogeny is associated with stage-dependent shifts in the functional potential of the A. lavandulifolia rhizosphere microbiome, suggesting adaptive adjustments in microbially mediated nutrient cycling to meet heightened host metabolic demands during late vegetative growth.

Myxomycete fruiting bodies are closely associated with bacteria, but the mechanisms shaping the bacterial communities remain unclear. We compared bacterial communities in fruiting bodies of four myxomycete species and their paired wood substrates using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. We detected 9732 bacterial ASV...

Microbial communities are key indicators of ecosystem health in aquaculture, yet their temporal dynamics under different cultivation systems remain poorly characterized. This study compares prokaryotic community succession across three commercial Litopenaeus vannamei cultivation systems with contrasting pond constr...
