Abstract

Prolonged exposure to aggressive atmospheric conditions promotes corrosion of concrete and reinforcement, reducing the performance of reinforced concrete transportation structures and necessitating assessment, repair, reconstruction, and strengthening to ensure reliability and extend safe service life. Acidic gases and other airborne agents accelerate degradation, especially when thin, permeable, or low-density concrete cover allows them to reach reinforcement, disrupt passivation, and initiate corrosion. Together, these factors govern carbonation, corrosion risk, and the residual durability and reliability of reinforced concrete bridge elements. Reinforced concrete bridges in urban environments are subject to accelerated deterioration due to aggressive environmental conditions, a high intensity of transient loading, and the specific characteristics of winter maintenance. Corrosion processes are among the key factors affecting the overall reliability and durability of the structure. The analysis and assessment of these processes are critically important, as they enable effective planning of maintenance measures, including control over the use of de-icing materials, and targeted adjustment of repair programs, including corrosion protection, rehabilitation of expansion joints, and restoration of drainage systems.
