Abstract

The sustainable management of soil fertility is essential for improving common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) productivity under the semi-arid conditions of Afghanistan. This study evaluated the comparative effects of two organic fertilizers, inorganic fertilizer (NPK), and their integrated application on the growth and yield performance of common bean during the 2025 growing season at the Research Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Kabul University. The experiment was arranged in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with six fertilizer treatments and three replications. Growth traits, yield components, grain yield, biological yield, and harvest index were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and treatment means were separated by Tukey’s HSD test at the 5% probability level. Fertilizer treatments significantly influenced most growth and yield parameters. The integrated application of 50% OF-1 + 50% NPK (T5) consistently produced superior plant growth, increased yield components, and achieved the highest grain yield, biological yield, and harvest index compared with the sole application of organic or inorganic fertilizers and the unfertilized control. The improved performance of the integrated treatment was attributed to enhanced nutrient availability and more efficient nutrient utilization throughout the crop growth period. These findings demonstrate that integrated nutrient management is a sustainable and effective strategy for increasing common bean productivity under semi-arid agroecological conditions. Future studies should evaluate long-term effects of integrated nutrient management under diverse agroecological conditions.

Effect of Different Soil Amendments on Growth, Yield, and Yield Components of Mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) Variety 08 Zudrus

This study was conducted from May–September 2025 / the 2025 growing season at the Research Farm of the Department of Agronomy, Faculty of Agriculture, Kabul University, to evaluate the effects of organic and inorganic fertilizers on the growth, yield, and yield components of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) variety 08 Zudrus. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four treatments with three replications. Treatments included a control, NPK fertilizer, XiR Biomass containing 10% humic acid, and XiR Biomass containing 20% humic acid. Data on growth, yield components, and yield parameters were analyzed using STAR software (version 2.0.1) through analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the 5% significance level. Fertilizer treatments significantly influenced several growth and yield traits. XiR Biomass containing 20% humic acid produced the tallest plants (35.10 cm), the highest number of pods per plant (10.53), and the greatest biological yield (7851.63 kg ha⁻¹), whereas XiR Biomass containing 10% humic acid produced the highest grain yield (2202.38 kg ha⁻¹) and number of grains per pod (11.00). In contrast, tiller number, branch number, pod length, pod width, and 100-seed weight were not significantly affected. Overall, XiR Biomass organic fertilizers showed greater potential than NPK fertilizer for improving mung bean growth and productivity under the agro-ecological conditions of Kabul.

Influence of Biochar and Inorganic Fertilizer on Soil Properties, Growth, Yield and Quality Parameters of French Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is an important legume vegetable crop; the integrated use of biochar with inorganic fertilisers may improve soil properties, nutrient availability and nutrient-use efficiency. Therefore, evaluating this approach is important for achieving sustainable and productive French bean cultivation in the Inceptisols of the Kanpur region. A field experiment was conducted at the Student's Instructional Farm, Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, during the Rabi season of 2025-26 to evaluate the effect of graded levels of biochar and fertiliser on the growth, yield-attributing characters and yield of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cv. Arka Komal grown on a sandy loam Inceptisol. The experiment comprised eight distinct treatment combinations (T1 to T8) evaluated in a randomised block design with three replications. The treatments incorporated varying levels of the recommended dose of fertiliser (RDF), namely 100%, 75%, and 50% RDF, together with biochar application rates of 1, 1.5, and 2 t ha-1. Growth, yield-attributing characters and yield were significantly influenced by treatment: T₄ (100% RDF + biochar @ 2.0 t ha⁻¹) recorded the maximum plant height of 14.50 cm at 30 days after sowing (DAS) and 45.12 cm at 60 DAS. Furthermore, the highest pod length (12.34 cm), number of pods plant-1 (32.42), seed index (42.12 g), seed yield (16.85 q ha-1), straw yield (27.68 q ha-1) and biological yield (44.53 q ha-1) were recorded under treatment T4, representing a substantial seed yield increase of approximately 31.03% over the control treatment (T8: 50% RDF + Biochar @ 2.0 t ha-1). Harvest index (35.42–37.84%) did not differ significantly among treatments. Combining the full recommended fertiliser dose with biochar @ 2.0 t ha⁻¹ was an effective option for improving French bean productivity on the alluvial Inceptisols of the Central Plain Zone of Uttar Pradesh.

Growth and Biomass Yield of Maize Crop (Zea Mays L) In Response to Complimentary Inorganic and Organic Fertilizer Treatment under Farm Management Trial in Akure, Nigeria

A field experiment was carried out during the wet season of 2026 at the Teaching and Research Farm of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. The aim is to examine the response of maize growth and biomass yield to inorganic (NPK) and complimentary organic fertilizer treatments. Initial soil samples were collected randomly from the experimental site and analyzed for some nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, pH) and microbial (bacteria, fungi) population. The experiment was carried out using four treatments, organic, inorganic, organic plus inorganic and control with each treatment replicated three times. Each plot has a dimension of 3 m x 4 m. Agronomic parameters measured were plant height (cm), stem circumference (cm) and biomass yield (g). The results shows that at 10WAS), plot treated with organic plus inorganic fertilizer had the highest stem height (284.67cm); stem circumference (11.32 cm); and leaf dry weight (69.50g). The control treatment which had no fertilizer application recorded the least value of all agronomic parameters measured. The use of the combination of organic and inorganic fertilizer is therefore recommended for smallholder farmers for increased crop yield and soil fertility improvement under intensive continuous cultivation.

Effects of Varied Nitrogen Fertilization Rates on Yield and Growth parameters of Hybrid Maize under agro-climatic conditions of Nangarhar, Afghanistan

Nitrogen is one of the most essential nutrients influencing the growth, development, and productivity of maize (Zea mays L.). This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different nitrogen fertilization rates on the growth and yield performance of hybrid maize under the agro-climatic conditions of Nangarhar, Afghanistan. The experimental treatments consisted of four nitrogen fertilization rates; 0, 130, 160 kg and 190 kg N ha⁻¹, Nitrogen fertilizer was applied in form of Urea (46%N) in three split application ¼ dose at sowing, ½ at knee high stage and ¼ at tasseling stage. The experiment was conducted as randomized complete block design (RCBD). The results showed that the application of 190 kg N ha⁻¹, produced significantly higher values than the other treatments for plant height (244 cm), stem diameter (9.92 cm), number of leaves per plant (15.83), cob length (22 cm), number of grain per cob (455), grain weight per cob (133.17 g), 1000-grain weight (300 g), biological yield (808 g), fresh cob yield (8.33 kg), fresh net grain yield per cob (153.17 g). The lowest values were recorded under the control treatment (0 kg N ha⁻¹) across all plant growth and yield parameters. Therefore, this article recommends 190 kg N ha⁻¹ for farmers in the region and in similar climatic regions to achieve good maize growth and high yields.

Growth and yield performance of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties under integrated nutrient management

Wheat productivity is constrained by declining soil fertility and low nutrient-use efficiency resulting from the continuous dependence on chemical fertilizers. Integrated Nutrient Management, through the judicious integration of organic, inorganic, and biological nutrient sources, offers a sustainable approach to enhance crop growth, yield, soil health, and long-term productivity; however, its effectiveness in combination with nano-fertilizers requires further evaluation. Therefore, a field experiment was planned during the Rabi season of 2024-25 and 2025-26, at the research farm of Maharishi Markandeshwar (Deemed to be University), Mullana. The experiment was laid out in a two-factorial randomized block design with three replications. Factor A comprised two wheat varieties (WH 1270 and DBW 222), while Factor B consisted of eight nutrient management treatments involving RDF, vermicompost (2 t/ha), foliar nano urea (1250 mL/ha), foliar nano DAP (1250 mL/ha), and Azotobacter applied alone or in combination. The pooled data revealed that the variety DBW 222 showed significantly higher plant height (94.34 cm), number of tillers/meter row length (65.77), DMA/meter row length (224.82 g), LAI (5.56), spike length (9.84 cm), grains/spikes (48.31), effective tillers/m2 (300.80), test weight (40.27 g), grain yield (5042 kg/ha) and straw yield (6651 kg/ha) over variety WH 1270. Among various nutrient combinations, maximum plant height (104.65 cm), number of tillers/meter row length (70.51), DMA/meter row length (251.73 g), LAI (6.18), spike length (10.88 cm), grains/spikes (51.37), effective tillers/m2 (322.57), test weight (42.21 g), grain yield (5642 kg/ha) and straw yield (7439 kg/ha) was recorded with treatment T3 (100% RDF with vermicompost @ 2t/ha) which was found at par with T5 and T4. These treatments were found superior over T2, T6, T8 and T7. The least were found in T1

Growth and Yield Performance of Three Rice Varieties under Organic and Mineral Fertilizer Combinations in Burkina Faso

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the growth and yield performance of three rice varieties under combinations of organic and mineral fertilisers in Burkina Faso and to identify a suitable organo-mineral formulation. A two-factor split-plot experiment with three replications was conducted using Nerica4, FKR84, and FKR60N. Two fertiliser dosages were assessed together with an absolute control. Dosage D1 comprised 9.4 kg of neutral soil, 600 g of organic manure, 4.5 g of NPK, and 3 g of urea, whereas D2 comprised 9.4 kg of neutral soil, 300 g of organic manure, 9 g of NPK, and 6 g of urea. The evaluated traits were production cycle, plant height, number and length of panicles, 1000-grain weight, theoretical paddy yield, and dry biomass. Fertiliser treatments significantly affected several growth- and yield-related traits, with responses varying among varieties and fertiliser combinations. Dosage D1 was associated with favourable production-cycle responses, particularly for the F6NU, F7NU, and F9NU combinations. Organo-mineral treatments also improved plant height and panicle traits, while the F2, F4, and F8 manures and their mineral-fertiliser combinations generally performed well for yield-related responses. Across the two dosages, D2 produced the more favourable paddy-yield response. These findings indicate that rice varietal performance depends on both fertiliser composition and dosage under the experimental conditions, with combined organic and mineral fertilisation showing potential for improving rice productivity. The results can be applied to guide the selection of promising organo-mineral fertiliser combinations and dosages for rice production in Burkina Faso, while field validation is needed before wider recommendation under farmers' conditions.
