TL;DR

Short Proximal Femoral Nail provides stable fixation for both stable and unstable intertrochanteric femoral fractures and offers excellent functional recovery, reliable fracture union, reduced surgical trauma, and facilitates early mobilization with acceptable complication rates.

Abstract

Background: Intertrochanteric femoral fractures are among the most common fragility fractures in elderly patients and are associated with significant morbidity. Early surgical fixation allows rapid mobilization and minimizes complications related to prolonged immobilization. Short Proximal Femoral Nail (PFN) has gained popularity because of its biomechanical advantages and minimally invasive nature. Objectives: To evaluate the functional and radiological outcomes of intertrochanteric femoral fractures treated with Short PFN and to assess its advantages and complications. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted on 40 adult patients with intertrochanteric femoral fractures treated with Short PFN between March 2023 and March 2025 at Chigateri General Hospital and Bapuji Hospital, attached to JJM Medical College, Davangere. Patients were followed for six months with clinical and radiological assessment. Functional outcome was evaluated using the Modified Harris Hip Score. Results: Forty patients were included, comprising 25 males (62.5%) and 15 females (37.5%). The majority of patients were aged 71–80 years. Boyd and Griffin Type II fractures were the most common (65%). Most fractures united satisfactorily with good functional recovery. The procedure was associated with minimal blood loss, shorter operative time, and a low complication rate. Functional outcome assessed using the Modified Harris Hip Score was predominantly good to excellent. Conclusion: Short Proximal Femoral Nail provides stable fixation for both stable and unstable intertrochanteric femoral fractures. It offers excellent functional recovery, reliable fracture union, reduced surgical trauma, and facilitates early mobilization with acceptable complication rates.

A Prospective Study of Functional Outcome of Intertrochanteric Fracture of Proximal Femur in Adults Treated with Proximal Femoral Nail

Abstract Introduction: Intertrochanteric (IT) fractures require stable fixation and early mobilization. This study evaluated the functional and radiological outcomes of proximal femoral nailing (PFN) in adults with IT fractures. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted over 18 months in 48...

Comparative Evaluation of Outcomes of Intertrochanteric Femur Fractures Treated with Proximal Femur Nail versus Proximal Femur Nail with Trochanteric Support Plate: A Prospective Comparative Study

Background: Intertrochanteric femur fractures are common injuries, particularly in older adults, and are associated with substantial morbidity and functional impairment. Proximal femur nail (PFN) is widely used because of its intramedullary load-sharing characteristics. Unstable fractures with compromised lateral wall...

Functional and Radiological Outcome of PFN vs. InterTAN in Fixation of Unstable Intertrochanteric Fracture

Background and Objectives: Intertrochanteric fractures of the femur are common in the elderly and are associated with considerable morbidity. The usual treatment is an intramedullary fixation with cephalomedullary nails. However, the comparative effectiveness of InterTAN and the proximal femoral nail (PFN) remain contr...

Functional outcome of hip hemiarthroplasty done through modified Hardinge approach in femoral neck fractures: a prospective study of 50 cases

Background: Femoral neck fractures are common injuries in older adults and are associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Arthroplasty is widely used for displaced intracapsular femoral neck fractures in older patients, while the choice of surgical approach and implant fixation remains an important part of pe...

Comparison of clinical and radiological outcomes of a proximal femoral nail with a helical screw versus a proximal femoral nail with two screws in elderly patients with intertrochanteric femur fractures

Background: Intertrochanteric femur fractures in the elderly carry high morbidity and mortality rates, while the Proximal Femoral Nail (PFN) is a standard treatment, debate persists regarding the optimal screw configuration. This study compares the clinical and radiological outcomes of the helical blade versus the two-...
