TL;DR

The results demonstrated that metribuzin exposure significantly inhibited earthworm growth, with the most pronounced effects observed at the highest concentration, and indicated a dose-dependent escalation of oxidative stress, identifying ROS and 8-OHdG as the most sensitive biomarkers.

Abstract

Metribuzin, a widely used triazine herbicide, has been extensively studied for its toxic effects on aquatic organisms, but its impact on soil organisms, particularly earthworms, remains insufficiently understood. This study investigates the ecological toxicity of metribuzin on Eisenia fetida, with emphasis on growth inhibition, oxidative stress and metabolic alterations. Earthworms were exposed to metribuzin at concentrations of 0, 5, 10 and 20 mg·kg-1 in artificial soil for a 28-day period. The results demonstrated that metribuzin exposure significantly inhibited earthworm growth, with the most pronounced effects observed at the highest concentration (20 mg·kg-1). The induction of oxidative stress by metribuzin was evidenced by elevated ROS levels and reduced activities of SOD, CAT, and POD. Furthermore, metribuzin exposure increased the levels of MDA and 8-OHdG, suggesting enhanced lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. IBRv2 analysis indicated a dose-dependent escalation of oxidative stress, identifying ROS and 8-OHdG as the most sensitive biomarkers. Metabolomic analysis revealed marked disruptions in metabolic pathways, particularly those associated with the amino acid metabolism, TCA cycle and glutathione metabolism. These findings suggest potential toxicological risks of metribuzin to soil ecosystems and underscore the importance of incorporating soil organisms into herbicide risk assessments.

Molecular to tissue-level perspective: Evaluating the toxicity and ecological risk of fluopyram to Eisenia fetida.

Fluopyram, a succinate dehydrogenase inhibitor (SDHI) fungicide, is applied to soil for the control of nematode diseases. However, its toxicity to non-target soil organisms such as earthworms remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that fluopyram exposure would induce multi-level toxicity in Eisenia fetida through t...

Enrofloxacin's dual effects on earthworms: Reproductive toxicity at environmental levels and growth promotion at elevated concentrations.

Integrated biomarker response (IBR) analysis revealed that EF's effects at environmental concentrations diminished over time, while its impacts at higher concentrations persisted or intensified, demonstrating that even sublethal exposures can alter key physiological and molecular functions in earthworms.

Synergistic toxicity of pyroxasulfone and pendimethalin on Eisenia fetida: an integrated biomarker response and molecular docking analysis

It is demonstrated that combined exposure elicits greater sub-lethal effects that are not predicted by acute toxicity alone, highlighting the importance of mixture toxicity and integrative biomarkers in soil ecotoxicological risk assessment.

Acetylsalicylic Acid at Trace Concentrations Induces Cellular Toxicity and Phytotoxicity in the Roots of Cultivated Plants

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) is frequently detected in wastewater and sewage sludge, which may represent potential pathways of entry into agricultural environments. However, its effects on cultivated plants at trace concentrations remain unexplored. This study evaluated the effects of ASA (1–1000 ng·L−1) on germination a...

Effects of atrazine on tissue damage, physiological and biochemical changes and transcriptome in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma).

Atrazine (ATZ), a widely used triazine herbicide frequently detected in aquatic environments, poses ecological risks, yet its toxicity mechanisms in estuarine/marine organisms remain unclear. The present study employed juvenile Oryzias melastigma (marine medaka) as the model organism, and the 96-h median lethal concent...
