Abstract
The paper investigates the nonlinear torsional dynamics of drill strings using mathematical and computational modeling. The study is motivated by the need to improve the reliability and efficiency of drilling processes under conditions when torsional vibrations affect the performance and the safety of drilling systems. A nonlinear mathematical model of the drill string is developed by treating it as a deformable rod with distributed parameters. The governing equations are derived from the Hamilton-Ostrogradsky variational principle under the assumption of finite strains within the framework of nonlinear elasticity. The distributed-parameter problem is reduced to a finite-dimensional system by means of the Bubnov-Galerkin method. Numerical simulations are performed to analyze the dynamic response of the considered systems and to evaluate the influence of geometric, dynamic, and physical parameters on drill string vibrations. The results show the effect of drill string length, angular velocity of the drill string, and material properties on the amplitude, frequency characteristics, modal interaction, and phase-plane structure of the nonlinear torsional response.
The U-shaped stiffened plates are widely used in construction, machinery, ships and other fields. It will inevitably lead to structural vibration problems due to its various loads in engineering applications. The aim of this study is to establish a semi-analytical model for evaluating the vibration characteristics of U...

This article examines a drill string modeled as a long elastic rod connecting the bit and surface equipment. The drill string is considered the primary element of a drilling dynamic system (DDS). A dynamic model is created, and equations for the DDS’s longitudinal oscillations are derived. A method for solving wave equ...

Severe drill-string–wellbore friction during slide drilling limits axial-load transfer and reduces drilling efficiency in extended-reach horizontal wells. To investigate the mechanical response of a horizontal drill string under axial vibration, a three-dimensional geometrically nonlinear finite element model was devel...

With the increasing number of deep wells, ultra-deep wells and ultra-deep wells, the problem of drill string vibra-tion damage is becoming more and more obvious. Shock absorbers are commonly used to reduce vibration. However, the existing research has not fully revealed the influence of shock absorber stiffness and dam...
