Radio Access Protocols Enhancement for Beyond 5G Extended Reality Services

Abstract

Extended Reality (XR) delivery in 5G-Advanced systems demands a simultaneous balance of ultra-low latency, high reliability, and high throughput. In accordance with 3GPP Release 18/19, this paper investigates Radio Access Network (RAN) protocol stack optimizations specifically for XR traffic. By deploying adaptive Radio Link Control (RLC) and Medium Access Control (MAC) layer mechanisms, we address architectural bottlenecks like Head-of-Line (HOL) blocking and inefficient resource allocation during traffic bursts. These modifications preserve high data rates while satisfying motion-to-photon latency and jitter bounds. Simulation results demonstrate that our multi-layer approach ensures stable Quality of Service (QoS) under dynamic channel conditions and high network congestion.

Scalability and Delay Analysis of XR Traffic in Optical Access Networks

The rapid evolution of 5G and emerging 6G networks requires optical access systems to support immersive extended reality (XR) services with stringent quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, like ultra-low latency and high bandwidth. However, conventional dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) schemes in passive optical netw...

Adaptive Traffic-to-Link MLO Scheme for Low Latency in IEEE 802.11be Wi-Fi 7 WLANs

This letter proposes an adaptive multi-link operation (MLO) traffic-to-link allocation scheme (ATLAS) to reduce the latency of multi-link devices (MLDs) by allocating the traffic to links under enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) uplink scenarios. A Markov chain is constructed to analyze EDCA, and the transmissi...

Internal Collision Resolution for Prioritized EDCA in IEEE 802.11bn: Toward Low-Latency Wireless Transport for XR and Multimedia Streaming

The IEEE 802.11bn (Wi-Fi 8) Ultra-High Reliability amendment introduces Prioritized EDCA (P-EDCA) to compress the long tail of MAC access delay for time-sensitive traffic such as extended reality (XR), cloud gaming, and high-quality real-time video. P-EDCA admits a station to the medium with a short idle-sensing interv...

HAWA: WLAN-Assisted AR Admission and Traffic Scheduling Framework for Latency Guarantee

Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR) has emerged as a versatile technology applied across diverse domains such as entertainment, industry, education, etc. Despite its great potential, MAR has not proliferated due to the lack of stringent latency guarantee, which is crucial for AR’s quality-of-experience. To fill the gap, thi...

Scaling 5G-TSN Bridges: Operating Regimes, Scheduling, and Time Synchronisation Under Heterogeneous Industrial Traffic

The nascTime framework on OMNeT++/Simu5G is used to evaluate how many TSN endpoints a single 5G NR cell can bridge before per-flow QoS degrades, showing that sub-3 ms TSN deadlines may require radio-configuration changes such as configured grants or higher numerology.
