Abstract

Let $p$ be a prime number. We prove the sharp Furstenberg set bound in the $p$-adic plane $\mathbb{Q}_p^2$: every $(s,t)$-Furstenberg set $E\subset\mathbb{Q}_p^2$ satisfies $$ \dim_H E\ge \min\left\{s+t,\frac{3s+t}{2},s+1\right\}. $$ This matches the sharp lower bound in the Euclidean plane. We also derive two related consequences: a $p$-adic projection theorem for the maps $\pi_\theta(x,y)=x+\theta y$, together with the corresponding exceptional set estimate giving a $p$-adic analogue of Oberlin's projection question; and a discretized fractal sum-product estimate over $\mathbb{Q}_p$, showing that sufficiently non-concentrated subsets of $\mathbb{Z}_p^\times$ cannot have both small sum set and small product set. The proof follows the projection-theoretic and multiscale machinery developed in the Euclidean works of Orponen-Shmerkin (arXiv:2301.10199) and Ren-Wang (arXiv:2308.08819). The main task is to rebuild this machinery in the non-archimedean setting, and along the way we develop several new $p$-adic inputs needed to overcome the ultrametric features of the problem.

$p$-adic properties of division polynomials and algebraic sigma functions

Let $p \geq 5$ be a prime, let $K$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}_p$, and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve with good reduction. Let $F_n$ denote the $n$-division polynomial of $E$. Silverman proved that if the reduction is ordinary, then for every $P \in E(K) \setminus \hat{E}(K)$ and a suitable power $q$ of $p$, t...

A Second-Logarithm Lower Bound for Sets with No Unique Sums

For an odd prime $p$, let $m(p)$ be the minimum cardinality of a set $A\subseteq \mathbb Z/p\mathbb Z$, with $|A|\geq2$, such that no sum in $A+A$ has a unique representation as an unordered pair from $A$, with repetition allowed. Bedert proved \[ m(p)\gg \log p\, \frac{\sqrt{\log^{(3)}p}}{\log^{(4)}p}. \] We prove the...

Hilbert's Irreducibility for $\mathbb{G}_m$

Let $K$ be a number field and $S$ a finite set of non-archimedean places. Write $\mathcal{O}_S$ for the ring of $S$-integers of $K$ and $\mathcal{O}_S^\times$ for its unit group. Let $\pi : X \rightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ be a morphism of (irreducible) curves defined over $K$, and denote by $\operatorname{Red}(\pi)$ the se...

Generalized Wieferich primes and monogenic polynomials

Let $b, p\in {\mathbb Z}$ with $b\ge 2$ and $p\ge 3$ a prime. If $b^{p-1}\equiv 1 \pmod{p^2}$, then $p$ is called a {\em generalized Wieferich prime base $b$}, or more succinctly, a {\em base-$b$ Wieferich prime}. When $b=2$, $p$ is also known simply as a Wieferich prime. We say that a monic polynomial $f(x)\in {\mathb...

Sumsets and generalized arithmetic progressions in multiplicative subgroups

Let $q=p^f$, and let $A\leq\mathbb{F}_q^\times$ be a multiplicative subgroup with $\mathbb{F}_p(A)=\mathbb{F}_q$. We prove that a proper subgroup $A$ is a generalized arithmetic progression (GAP) if and only if $|A| \in \{1, 2, 4\}$, and we determine when the full group $\mathbb{F}_q^\times$ is a GAP. For certain famil...

A Uniform Proof for the Small Davenport Constant of the Exponent-$p$ Heisenberg Group

Let $p$ be an odd prime and let $H_{p^3}=\operatorname{UT}_3(\mathbb{F}_p)$ be the Heisenberg group of order $p^3$ and exponent $p$. We prove $\mathsf{d}(H_{p^3})=3p-3$. The main ingredient of the proof is an order-value growth theorem. If $B$ is a noncollinear zero-sum sequence of $n$ nonzero vectors in $\mathbb{F}_p^...
