Sustained high PSU was associated with-rather than shown to cause-elevated ADHD-like symptom trajectories across adolescence, and may index a potentially modifiable behavioral correlate warranting further study.

Abstract

Adolescence is a period of marked change in mental health symptoms, yet longitudinal evidence on the developmental course of ADHD-like symptoms and their behavioral correlates remains limited. Using five-wave data from a Chinese accelerated cohort (N = 3414), we estimated nonlinear age-related trajectories of total ADHD-like symptoms and subdimensions (hyperactivity, attention deficit, impulsivity) from ages 10-18. Problematic smartphone use (PSU) was examined through cross-lagged time-varying associations in both directions and through latent trajectory groups. ADHD-like symptoms followed a U-shaped pattern, declining in early adolescence and increasing in later adolescence. Sex and subjective socioeconomic status were primarily associated with baseline differences, with higher initial severity among boys and lower-SES adolescents. Higher PSU at the preceding wave predicted higher subsequent ADHD-like symptoms across domains. Long-term PSU patterns were most clearly expressed in hyperactivity: adolescents in the persistently high PSU trajectory group exhibited the greatest symptom burden and a stronger late-adolescent upturn in this domain. Within this observational design, sustained high PSU was associated with-rather than shown to cause-elevated ADHD-like symptom trajectories across adolescence, and may index a potentially modifiable behavioral correlate warranting further study.

Late-emerging ADHD symptoms and their association with psychotic experiences in a general population-based stimulant-naïve adolescent cohort.

BACKGROUND Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been associated with an increased risk of subsequent psychotic disorders. However, ADHD symptom trajectories have not been adequately considered, and it remains unclear whether associations with psychotic experiences (PEs) differ across trajectories among a...

Clinical overlap between at-risk mental states and attention-deficit/hyperactivity symptoms in community adolescents: investigating the influence of sex

Background Adolescence is a period of heightened vulnerability to mental disorders, including attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and at-risk mental states for psychosis (ARMS). Although evidence suggests an association between these conditions, research in community adolescent samples is limited, and the m...

Neurocognitive and Temperament Predictors of Changes in Child and Adolescent Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors for Youths With and Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) are an urgent concern, with elevated risk in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Drawing on the developmental psychopathology framework and socio-ecological model of suicide risk, this study examined trajectories of STBs in youth with and without ADHD and their predic...

Longitudinal Associations and Gender-Stratified Patterns in Adolescents’ Emotional and Behavioral Problems—Based on a Cross-Lagged Panel Network Model

Adolescence is a critical period characterized by heightened emotional and behavioral challenges, profoundly impacting young people’s social adaptation and future development. Previous research has predominantly employed traditional latent variable analysis to examine factors associated with emotional and behavioral pr...

The longitudinal association between physical activity and insomnia symptoms among Chinese adolescents: The mediating role of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation and the moderating role of sex.

The findings suggest that physical activity may be relevant to adolescent insomnia symptoms partly through lower maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation, although the effect was modest and should be interpreted cautiously.
