Abstract
A field experiment was conducted during the 2026 dry season at the Dryland Teaching and Research Farm of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, to evaluate the response of maize (Zea mays L.) variety Oba Super 11 to slow-release organo-mineral fertilizer (SROMF) formulations under the Sudan Savannah agro-ecological zone of Nigeria. The study was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with five fertilizer treatments: (i) mineral fertilizer (NPK 20:10:10), (ii) NPK SROM fertilizer (20:10:10), (iii) NPK SROM fertilizer (15:10:10), (iv) NPK SROM fertilizer (12:6:6), and (v) a control (no fertilizer), replicated three times. Data were collected on growth and yield parameters. Results showed that fertilizer treatments significantly (p ≤ 0.05) influenced all growth and yield parameters measured. At 9 weeks after sowing (WAS), the tallest plants (181.5 cm) were recorded under NPK organo-mineral fertilizer (12:6:6), while the shorter plants (83.1 cm) were recorded in the control plot. Grain yield was highest in NPK SROM fertilizer (20:10:10), producing 6.6 t ha⁻¹, followed by the mineral fertilizer treatment (5.5 t ha⁻¹), while the control had the lowest yield (1.1 t ha⁻¹). Similarly, the highest dry matter yield (6.6 t ha⁻¹) was obtained from the NPK SROM fertilizer (20:10:10) treatment. The study concludes that slow-release organo-mineral fertilizers significantly enhanced efficient nutrient utilization and in turn improved growth and yield performance of maize under Sudan Savannah conditions, with the NPK SROM fertilizer (20:10:10) formulation showing superior grain yield performance and is therefore recommended as a sustainable nutrient management strategy for improving maize productivity while potentially reducing nutrient losses under different soil textural classes.
A field experiment was carried out during the wet season of 2026 at the Teaching and Research Farm of the Federal University of Technology, Akure. The aim is to examine the response of maize growth and biomass yield to inorganic (NPK) and complimentary organic fertilizer treatments. Initial soil samples were collected randomly from the experimental site and analyzed for some nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, pH) and microbial (bacteria, fungi) population. The experiment was carried out using four treatments, organic, inorganic, organic plus inorganic and control with each treatment replicated three times. Each plot has a dimension of 3 m x 4 m. Agronomic parameters measured were plant height (cm), stem circumference (cm) and biomass yield (g). The results shows that at 10WAS), plot treated with organic plus inorganic fertilizer had the highest stem height (284.67cm); stem circumference (11.32 cm); and leaf dry weight (69.50g). The control treatment which had no fertilizer application recorded the least value of all agronomic parameters measured. The use of the combination of organic and inorganic fertilizer is therefore recommended for smallholder farmers for increased crop yield and soil fertility improvement under intensive continuous cultivation.

The study aims to evaluate tissue nutrient composition of lowland rice varieties as influenced by sowing method and fertilizer management in Nigerian Savanna. Field trials were conducted at the Institute for Agricultural Research, Samaru, and Irrigation Research Station Kadawa in Northern Guinea and Sudan Savanna zones of Nigeria respectively, during 2020 and 2021 wet seasons. Treatments consisted of three (3) lowland varieties (Federation of Agricultural Research Oryza (FARO) (FARO 44, FARO 52, and FARO 57), four (4) rates of combined (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassiun (NPK) and Agriczyme 3X organic liquid fertilizers (O.L) (0:0:0 kg NPK ha-1 plus 3L ha-1, 60:30:30 kg NPK ha-1 plus 1.5L ha-1, 60:30:30 kg NPK ha-1 plus 3L ha-1 and 120:60:60 kg NPK ha-1 plus 0L ha-1), and three (3) sowing methods (dibbling, drilling and broadcasting). These were factorially combined and laid out in a split plot design, fertilizer rate and planting method as main plots and lowland rice varieties as subplots replicated three times. The gross and net plot sizes were 3.0m x 4.0m (12m2) and 2m x3m (6m2) respectively. The results revealed Leaf tissue nutrient composition showed significant effects of variety, sowing method and fertilizer management on nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentrations. FARO 44 generally recorded the highest nitrogen concentration, drilling enhanced phosphorus and potassium uptake, while broadcasting generally increased nitrogen concentration, application of NPK fertilizer and Agric-Zyme 3X organic liquid fertilizer improved nutrient uptake and supports sustainable lowland rice production. In conclusion rice tissue nutrient composition was significantly influenced by variety, sowing method, fertilizer management and their interactions. FARO 44 showed superior nitrogen uptake, while drilling improved phosphorus and potassium uptake. Integrated use of inorganic and organic fertilizers enhanced nutrient use efficiency and offers a sustainable approach for improving lowland rice production in the Nigerian savanna.

Low soil fertility and inappropriate fertilizer management remain major constraints to seed yam production in the Nigerian savanna. This study evaluated the influence of NPK fertilizer types and rates on growth attributes, chlorophyll content, and tuber yield of Kpamyo yam (Dioscorea rotundata L.) minitubers. Field experiments were conducted during the 2023 and 2024 cropping seasons at the IITA research farm, Kubwa, Abuja, using a split–split plot design with three replications. Treatments consisted of three planting populations (266,000, 133,000 and 88,000 plant ha-1), three fertilizer types (NPK 15:15:15, 20:10:10, and 27:13:13), and four fertilizer rates (0, 200, 400, and 600 kgha⁻¹). Growth parameters, chlorophyll content (SPAD), and yield attributes were measured and subjected to analysis of variance. Results showed that fertilizer types and rates significantly (p<0.05) affected plant height, leaf area index, chlorophyll content, tuber yield, sett multiplication ratio and harvest index. NPK 27:13:13 promoted the most vigorous vegetative growth but produced comparatively lower tuber yield and harvest index, in contrast, NPK 15:15:15 consistently resulted in higher chlorophyll content and superior yield performance. Tuber yield increased with fertilizer rate up to 400 kg ha-1 but declined at 600 kg ha-1. Plant population density significantly influenced tuber size, with higher densities reducing mean tuber weight due to increased competition. The application of NPK 15:15:15 at 400 kg ha-1 provides the optimum nutrient combination for maximizing physiological efficiency and tuber yield of Kpamyo yam minitubers under Southern Guinea Savanna conditions, offering a practical strategy for improving seed yam production in Nigeria.

The present investigation was conducted during the winter season of 2021-22 at the Horticulture Research Farm, Department of Horticulture, Janta Vedic College, Baraut, Baghpat (U.P.), India. The study aimed to evaluate the combined effects of inorganic and bio-fertilizers on the growth and yield of broad beans. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design (RBD) with seven treatments: T0 (control), T1 (100% NPK), T2 (75% NPK + Rhizobium), T3 (75% NPK + VAM), T4 (75% NPK + Azospirillum), T5 (75% NPK + Rhizobium + VAM) and T6 (75% NPK + Azospirillum + VAM), with three replications. The results showed that the integrated application of Rhizobium and VAM with reduced NPK (T5) significantly enhanced various growth parameters, including the highest seed germination (97.97%), plant height (88.25 cm), leaf length (6.12 cm), leaf width (3.15 cm) and the number of branches per plant (8.06). Additionally, T5 treatment also led to earlier flowering (45.56 days after sowing) and superior yield attributes, such as the maximum number of pods per plant (49.61), pod weight (4.07 g), number of seeds per pod (4.40), pod length (5.20 cm), seed index (140.75 g) and pod yield (304.13 q/ha). The study concludes that the application of 75% NPK in combination with Rhizobium and VAM is highly effective in improving both the growth and yield of broad beans under Delhi NCR conditions.

Field experiments were carried out during the 2024 and 2025 cropping seasons at the Teaching
and Research Farms of College of Agriculture Science and Technology Lafia Nasarawa State,
Nigeria to determine the effect of Nodumax and SSP fertilizers on the growth, yield and grain
quality of soybean. Routine analysis was carried out on the field in both cropping seasons using
standard analytical procedures. The field was manually cleared and demarcated into plots
measuring 3 x 3 m. Four ridges of 3 m long and a spacing of 0.75 m were constructed per plot
with a 1m inter plot boundary. Three fertilizer sources; single super phosphate (SSP) at the rate
of 60 Kg P2O5, SSP (60 Kg P2O5) boosted with Nodumax, Nodumax (sole) that served as
treatments, were properly broadcast and incorporated into the soil before planting. There were
plots without fertilizer application that served as control. Treatments were replicated four times
and laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design. Soybean seeds of the variety TGX-1935
3F (early variety) were drilled into the ridges. For both seasons the crop was grown to maturity
and harvested after twelve weeks. Proximate composition of soybean was determined to find out
the quality of grain. Data collected was subjected to the analysis of variance (ANOVA)
usinggens tat and where significant difference among means was observed, Fischer’s least
significant difference was used to separate means. Results from this study showed that there was
response to treatment application in both seasons. The single superphosphate treatment boosted
with nodumax gave the best yield in terms of grain weight and quality while the nodumax
treatment gave the best yield in terms of vegetative growth. It was thus concluded that SSP
boosted with nodumax would give the best yield in terms of grain.

A field experiment was conducted during the kharif seasons of 2023 and 2024 at the Soil Test Crop Response (STCR) farm, Department of Soil Science, Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth (MPKV), Rahuri, India, to evaluate the effect of graded nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium (NPK) levels on the growth, yield, nutrient uptake and soil fertility status of soybean (Glycine max L.). The experiment involved 12 treatments comprising the application of NPK in various combinations and a control, arranged in a randomised block design (RBD) with three replications. The soil of the experimental site was silty clay loam in texture, low in available N and P, but very high in available K. Results revealed that application of 50:75:45 N:P2O5:K2O kg ha-1 + 10 t ha-1 farmyard manure (FYM) (T12) significantly improved chlorophyll content at 30 (36.28), 45 (37.89), 60 (40.01) and 90 (37.80) days after sowing (DAS), as well as grain (33.07 q ha-1) and straw yield (41.67 q ha-1) of soybean on a pooled basis. It also enhanced the number of pods plant-1 (88.17), number of seeds plant-1 (184.00) and weight of seeds plant-1 (35.92 g) of soybean on a pooled basis. The T12 recorded the highest N, P and K uptake in the grain and straw of soybean, while improving soil organic carbon (SOC) (0.72 %) and the available nutrient status after the harvest of soybean compared with nutrient omission and unfertilised treatments. In contrast, nutrient omission treatments markedly reduced crop performance and nutrient uptake, indicating the importance of a balanced nutrient supply. The principal component analysis (PCA) clearly demonstrated the differential response of soybean treatments to graded NPK levels. The study concluded that the integrated application of inorganic fertilisers with FYM (50:75:45 N:P2O5:K2O kg ha-1 + 10 t ha-1 FYM) enhances soybean productivity, nutrient use efficiency and soil fertility sustainability.
