It is demonstrated that responses to quorum sensing molecules are strongly dependent on the signal, substrate, microbial context, and cultivation conditions, highlighting the limited predictive power of pure-culture assays for microbial communication in interacting communities and emphasizing the importance of studying signal perception under process-relevant cultivation conditions.
Both the assembled environmental metagenomes and the complete genomes of isolated bacteria consistently support the broad potential of quorum-sensing systems in mediating the dissemination or regulation of resistome spreading.

Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) production from organic waste via microbial chain elongation (CE) technology represents a pivotal way toward high-value resource recovery. However, real organic wastes generally have complex composition, which results in intricate interspecies interactions in microbial consortium and...
Oligosaccharides can support gut health by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus, to help maintain gut balance and boost the immune system of the host. During the intestinal colonization, the forming biofilms can improve its adhesion and protect it from immune attacks and environmental stre...

The increasing accumulation of organic waste and the demand for renewable chemicals highlight the production of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) as an effective strategy for waste valorization. Microbial chain elongation (CE) converts short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) into MCFAs. However, its efficiency in mixed cultures...

ABSTRACT Plastic-degrading bacteria predominantly colonize polymer surfaces as biofilms, yet it remains unclear whether the biofilm phenotype contributes to metabolism beyond retaining extracellular enzymes. Here, we combine population-level RNA-sequencing across three conditions—biofilm cells on polyethylene terephtha...
