Abstract

The thermodynamics of protonation equilibria and equilibria between enol and keto tautomers occurring in naturally found hydroxy derivatives of trans-resveratrol analogues were investigated. Reaction Gibbs free energies at room temperature were obtained using the B3LYP functional together with a continuum solvation model for water. From these data, acidity constants (pK a) and tautomerization constants (pK T) were calculated for the electronic ground state (S0) and the lowest excited singlet state (S1). The results reveal a pronounced dependence of both equilibria on the position of the hydroxy substituents. Upon photoexcitation, the compounds become considerably stronger acids and indicate, in many cases, a shift toward the keto tautomers rather than the parent enol forms. Moreover, our results support the feasibility of proton transfer from a hydroxy group on one aromatic ring to the adjacent ring via the central −CHCH– bridge. Such processes may be relevant for nonradiative de-excitation pathways and for the protective biochemical functions of these compounds in plants.

Effects of sequential microhydration on thymine tautomerization

The tautomerization of thymine between its keto and enol forms is a key event for spontaneous mutagenesis. While the intrinsic enol-to-keto conversion is kinetically hindered in the gas phase, the presence of a discrete microhydration environment can drastically alter this landscape. Our M06-2X free energy calculations...

TAUTOMERIC TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE SCHIFF BASE OF GOSSYPOL WITH 3-AMINO-5-METHYLISOXAZOLE IN DMSO AND CHLOROFORM

The structure and tautomeric equilibria of the Schiff base of gossypol with 3-amino-5-methylisoxazole were investigated by NMR spectroscopy and quantum chemical methods. It was established that in chloroform solution the compound exists exclusively in the dienamine tautomeric form. The reasons why most Schiff bases of...

Theoretical and NMR analysis of condensation of glyoxylic acid and urea in aqueous solution with allantoin formation.

The mechanism for allantoin formation via the condensation of glyoxylic acid and urea is studied using a combined theoretical and experimental approach. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are employed to explore the potential energy surface and identify key intermediates and transition states, while NMR spect...

Thermodynamic Mapping of C5‐Substituent Autoxidation Pathways in 1,5‐Dimethylcytosine: A Quantum Chemical Study

The autoxidation pathways of the methyl substituent at position 5 in 1,5‐dimethylcytosine (1,5dmC) were investigated using DFT and DLPNO‐CCSD(T) calculations with implicit SMD(H2O) solvation. A radical reaction network was constructed to assess nonenzymatic pathways leading to hydroxymethyl, formyl, and carboxyl oxidat...

Photoacidity and ESIPT in luteolin: acidity-vibrational frequency relationships across electronic states

The photochemical antioxidant properties of small organic molecules in electronically excited states have become an important topic in modern photochemistry and redox biology. Photoexcitation can trigger ultrafast proton and hydrogen transfer processes, leading to substantial changes in acidity and redox behavior. This...

Mechanistic Insights Into Catechin Epimerization: Interplay of Deprotonation and Quinone Methide Stabilization

Catechin epimerization occurs during thermal processing of tea and can influence its bioactivity and nutritional properties. However, the structural factors governing epimerization behavior remain incompletely understood. In this study, we systematically investigated the effects of chemical structure on epimerization...
