Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between financial inclusion and sustainable development across 44 Asian countries from 2000 to 2023, addressing critical gaps in the literature regarding comprehensive measurement, digital infrastructure, and heterogeneous effects. Using Principal Component Analysis, we construct a comprehensive financial inclusion index incorporating both traditional banking metrics and digital infrastructure indicators. Our panel data analysis, employing the Fixed Effects Model and Feasible Generalized Least Squares estimators, reveals a significant positive relationship between financial inclusion and sustainable development outcomes. A one-unit increase in the financial inclusion index is associated with a 0.936-point improvement in the SDG Index Score — representing approximately 16.4% of a standard deviation. Notably, we find considerable heterogeneity in impacts across economic contexts, with dramatically stronger effects in lower-income countries (coefficients 4.6–8.6 times larger than in high-GDP counterparts) and less urbanized countries. The strong complementarity between financial inclusion and education underscores the importance of integrated developmental approaches. For academics, these findings provide a foundation for refining theoretical models and exploring transmission mechanisms. For practitioners and policymakers, the results offer actionable insights: prioritize financial inclusion in lower-income and rural areas, invest in digital infrastructure, and integrate financial literacy programs to maximize developmental returns. This research provides evidence-based guidance for developing context-specific financial inclusion strategies to accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.
