The relationship between preoperative systemic inflammation markers and postoperative complications in patients undergoing abdominal surgery

TL;DR

It is demonstrated that measuring systemic inflammation markers preoperatively could be the easiest and most cost-effective method to predict postoperative complications and routine assessment of these parameters before surgery may aid in the early identification of patients at risk, allowing for appropriate treatment planning.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between preoperative systemic inflammation markers and postoperative complications. This study was conducted as a retrospective, single-center observational study. A total of 674 patients undergoing elective abdominal surgery under general anesthesia were included in the study. Data were collected through patient information forms, preoperative and postoperative laboratory values, and calculation of systemic inflammation markers. Independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Pearson chi-square test, Wilcoxon test, Spearman correlation analysis, and multivariable logistic regression were used for data analysis. Data from 674 patients with a mean age of 57.17 ± 16.21 years were analyzed. Clavien-Dindo sınıflandırmasına göre hastaların %39,6’sında en az bir komplikasyon görülmüştür. A significant positive correlation was found between perioperative findings and systemic inflammation markers. Among the parameters evaluated, NLR (AUC = 0.995) and SII (AUC = 0.957) demonstrated the highest discriminative power, both remaining robust independent predictors in multivariable analysis. This study demonstrated that measuring systemic inflammation markers preoperatively could be the easiest and most cost-effective method to predict postoperative complications. Therefore, routine assessment of these parameters before surgery may aid in the early identification of patients at risk, allowing for appropriate treatment planning.

Associations of Preoperative and Early Postoperative Biomarkers with Wound Complications in a Clinically Restricted Surgical Population: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Background/Objectives: Postoperative wound complications remain a clinically important challenge across surgical disciplines, while the contribution of preoperative biological status and the early postoperative systemic response remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to investigate whether routinely available...

An inflammation–nutrition composite index and its dynamic change for predicting postoperative wound complications

Postoperative wound complications are an important cause of morbidity, and routinely available inflammatory markers may assist with early risk assessment. This study evaluated a newly proposed exploratory composite index, the Wound Inflammation–Nutrition Index (WINA), and its change between postoperative day 1 and post...

Preoperative Inflammatory Risk Markers and Postoperative Creatinine and Lactate as Mortality Markers After Surgery for Stanford Type A Acute Aortic Dissection

Objective: The primary objective was to evaluate the association between preoperative platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), measured at admission, and 30-day mortality after emergency surgical repair for Stanford type A acute aortic dissection (TAAD). Secondary analyses evaluated other preoperative inflammatory and bioch...

Preoperative C-Reactive Protein-Albumin-Lymphocyte Index and Related Clinical Factors Associated With Postoperative Complications Following Cholecystectomy in Acute Cholecystitis: A Retrospective Study.

AIM Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the primary treatment for acute cholecystitis (AC), although various postoperative complications may still occur. Inflammatory composite indices have gained increasing attention in surgical risk assessment; among them, the C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index inte...

Association between preoperative serum albumin and serum cholesterol with surgical site infection: a prospective observational study

Background: Surgical site infection (SSI) is one of the most common healthcare-associated infections and a major cause of postoperative morbidity, prolonged hospital stays, and increased healthcare costs. While obesity and hypoalbuminemia are established risk factors for SSI, the roles of serum cholesterol and serum al...

Predictive Value of Perioperative Systemic Inflammation Response Index Dynamics for Postoperative Pulmonary Infection Following Esophagectomy: A Multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study

Background Postoperative Pulmonary Infection (POPI) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality following esophagectomy. Current static inflammatory markers lack the specificity to distinguish between surgical stress and early infection. This study aims to investigate whether the dynamic perioperative changes in the...
