Longer breastfeeding duration was positively associated with communication, fine motor, and problem-solving outcomes and Prenatal tobacco exposure was associated with lower communication, fine motor, and problem-solving scores.
Abstract
Background Early childhood development is shaped by interactions between biological, prenatal, nutritional, and social factors. Evidence regarding their domain-specific associations across ASQ-3 domains remains limited in Eastern Europe. Objectives To examine biological, prenatal, nutritional, and social predictors of developmental outcomes measured with the ASQ-3. Methods This cross-sectional study included 167 full-term Bulgarian children aged 14–42 months. Parents completed age-appropriate ASQ-3 questionnaires and a structured survey on prenatal and family characteristics. Raw ASQ-3 scores were converted into age-standardized Z-scores. Stepwise multiple linear regression analyses were conducted for each domain. Results Longer breastfeeding duration was positively associated with communication, fine motor, and problem-solving outcomes. Prenatal tobacco exposure was associated with lower communication, fine motor, and problem-solving scores. Communication outcomes were additionally associated with residential setting and bilingual home environment. No significant predictors were identified for gross motor development. Conclusions Early developmental domains demonstrate distinct associations with prenatal, nutritional, and social factors.
ABSTRACT Healthy and stimulating early life environments are key for children to develop to their full potential. Household socioeconomic status (SES) is a strong predictor of early child development (ECD). This study used a rich new dataset from Andean Peru to examine the pathways through which household SES shapes EC...

Introduction Neighborhood-level opportunity plays a critical but underexplored role in shaping a child's early developmental outcomes. We hypothesized that higher neighborhood opportunities would be associated with higher developmental outcomes in early childhood. Methods This observational cohort study included childr...

Abstract Background Fathers play meaningful and often under-recognised roles in supporting early child development (ECD) but evidence from crisis-affected settings is limited. In Lebanon, ongoing economic and social instability places pressure on the conditions that support children’s development, emphasising the value...

Background: Early childhood is a critical period for brain development, yet many children in low- and middle-income countries face adversities that put them at risk of not reaching their developmental potential. To address gaps in understanding factors which predict developmental outcomes at 5 years in a South African...

The purpose of this study is to identify latent profiles of infant development at 16-17 months and to longitudinally examine the predictive effects of early (4-5 months postpartum) parenting characteristics (maternal parenting behavior, maternal parenting stress, and paternal involvement) on these profiles. Data from 4...

This longitudinal study within the Generation R cohort (n = 1,085) examined how maternal, child, and contextual factors relate to maternal sensitivity across childhood. Maternal sensitivity was observed at child ages 1, 3, 4, and 10 using the Ainsworth and Erickson scales. Predictors included maternal history of child...
