Abstract
Chemical recycling of plastic waste into value-added chemicals represents a key strategy for advancing a circular plastics economy. Herein, we report the first systematic application of commercially available Florisil® as an inexpensive, readily available heterogeneous catalyst for the alcoholysis of polyester and polycarbonate plastic waste. Under optimized conditions, poly(lactic acid) (PLA), poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), poly(4-hydroxybutyrate) (P4HB), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), poly(ethylene succinate) (PES), and bisphenol A polycarbonate (PC-BPA) were efficiently depolymerized into valuable diesters and diols in good to excellent yields (up to ~90%). The catalytic system also maintained high performance on a larger reaction scale and proved effective for the selective depolymerization of mixed polyester waste streams, demonstrating its robustness and practical applicability. Unlike many previously reported catalytic systems that rely on metal salts or specially synthesized catalysts, Florisil® requires no prior modification and combines operational simplicity with high catalytic efficiency. These findings establish Florisil® as a sustainable and practical catalytic alternative for plastic waste valorization, broadening the range of accessible heterogeneous catalysts for chemical recycling.
Polyolefin plastics, such as polyethylene (PE), possess chemically inert and nonpolar C–C backbones, making them difficult to recycle and causing persistent environmental pollution. The lack of green and highly selective upcycling methods has led to severe environmental concerns and resource waste. Photoelectrocatalysi...
Conventional recycling of polyolefins and rubbers is hindered by high energy consumption, complex processing, and limited substrate compatibility—fundamental barriers that have long impeded practical waste valorization. Here, we overcome these limitations with a mechanochemical strategy that leverages AlCl3, a classi...
Polyurethane (PU) is a non-biodegradable thermoset plastic and a persistent waste burden with an annual production of around 26 million tonnes. Conventional disposal routes squander valuable resources and generate greenhouse gas emissions. Though chemical recycling offers a sustainable reuse route by depolymerizing P...

To address the challenge of mixed plastic waste management, we present a one-pot hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) process that selectively converts mixed oxygenated aromatic plastics including polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polycarbonate (PC), polyphenyl ether (PPO), and bisphenol-A-based epoxy resin (E20) into high-value...

In contrast to polymer-to-polymer recycling of waste polyethylene terephthalate (wPET), chemical upcycling into added-value molecules beyond terephthalic acid is a promising strategy. Among possible transformations, electrophilic substitution offers a direct path, yet has remained unrealized due to the electron-deficie...
