Abstract
Polyolefins valued for their excellent properties are the highest produced and widely used plastics. However, their chemical stability and massive accumulation arouse severe environmental issues, necessitating urgent resolution of recycling. Current recycling strategies encounter challenges like noble metal catalyst dependence, harsh conditions, sensitivity, poor selectivity, and low-valued products. Here, we report a potentially sustainable and scalable tandem dehydrogenation-oxidation system that operates under mild conditions (120 °C, in air) without precious metals. With 1,1,2-C2H3Cl3 serving as both the solvent and chlorine radical source, polyolefins, and mixed polyethylene wastes can be efficiently converted into α,ω-functional wax under the combined action of H2O2 and phase-transfer catalyst (CP)3PW4O16 with >95% carbon utilization efficiency. The process is tolerant to water, oxygen, and common plastic additives, eliminating pre‑purification. This work offers an economically promising and potentially scalable pathway for polyolefin waste upcycling.
Conventional recycling of polyolefins and rubbers is hindered by high energy consumption, complex processing, and limited substrate compatibility—fundamental barriers that have long impeded practical waste valorization. Here, we overcome these limitations with a mechanochemical strategy that leverages AlCl3, a classi...
Recycling and upcycling of plastic waste are typically energy-intensive and reducing their energy demand is crucial for the success of a sustainable plastic-to-resource transition. Hydro-conversion is a leading route for plastic waste valorization but typically requires high H2 pressures, especially for upcycling pol...

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste is highly resistant to natural degradation, and conventional chemical recycling routes typically rely on acidic, basic or hydrogen-assisted processes under harsh conditions. Here, we present a solvent-free, oxidative depolymerization strategy that converts PET plastic wa...
Polyolefin hydrogenolysis offers a promising route for the upcycling of plastic waste, yet is hindered by the high cost of noble-metal catalysts and the safety concerns of high-pressure H2. Current systems typically rely on Ru or Pt catalysts to mediate key elementary steps, including H2 dissociation and C─C bond cleav...

Hydrocracking over bifunctional metal-acid catalysts offers a promising route for converting polyolefin waste into liquid fuels, but highly active and economically viable non-noble-metal catalysts remain scarce. Here we show that such catalysts can be developed by independently tuning metal and acid sites to balance th...

Efficient recycling of polyurethane foam (PUF) under mild conditions remains a critical challenge. Herein, we report a ternary 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG)/cadmium (Cd)/1-methyl-2-hydroxymethylimidazole (HMMI) catalyst with Cd as the metal center, integrating Brønsted base, Lewis acid, and binuclear metal. Combin...
