Abstract
Water confined in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films exhibits enhanced basicity toward embedded chromophores, yet whether this anomalous reactivity reflects a broader acid-base duality remains unexplored. Here, using 5-methoxyflavone (5MF) as a photobase probe whose C═O stretch is spectrally isolated in FTIR, we uncover that short hydrogen bonds (SHBs) render the same confined water capable of protonating 5MF without external acid. In low-water-content PVA films, the C═O stretch of 5MF red-shifts substantially, confirming SHB formation. Time-resolved fluorescence reveals two protonated emission bands with identical, short lifetimes, distinct from the long-lived free cation in acidic films─pointing to a tightly bound 5MFH+···OH- complex rather than free 5MFH+. DFT calculations suggest that the distinct emissions can be rationalized as two limiting wave function distributions of the same proton undergoing quantum delocalization within the SHB. This unified SHB picture resolves the conflicting acid-base behaviors of confined water and highlights the potential of PVA films as versatile platforms for exploring acid-base phenomena enabled by nanoconfinement.
Organic electrode materials (OEMs) offer a sustainable alternative to inorganic cathodes but typically suffer from low intrinsic electronic conductivity. The material historically reported as bis-tetraaminobenzoquinone (TAQ) exhibits bulk conductivity two orders of magnitude higher than its close analogue tetraaminophe...

Halogen bonding (XB) is often analyzed in terms of isolated dimers, yet under realistic solution conditions, it coexists with a dense, rapidly fluctuating network of weaker contacts whose net effect on bond strength is difficult to quantify. Here, we combine gas-phase quantum-chemical calculations with explicit-solvent...

Controlling long-range exciton diffusion remains a central challenge in organic photocatalysts because of the inherent trade-off between extended π-conjugation and long-range structural order. Here, we report a topochemical polymerization strategy that converts a single-crystalline hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HO...
The development of fast proton-conducting materials that operate above 150°C with high chemical stability is both challenging and critically important for advancing proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this study, we constructed two three-dimensional COFs with covalent phosphonate modification using a solve...

Methanolysis is a promising strategy for chemical recycling of ester-containing plastics, but current approaches rely on homogeneous acids/bases or heterogeneous catalysts, which suffer from corrosion and deactivation. Here we report that common neutral salts can promote plastic methanolysis via an ion-pair cooperative...

Elucidating the water splitting by neutral metals is crucial for understanding the structure-reactivity relationship of catalysts. However, experimental characterization of such neutral metal-water systems remains extremely challenging due to the difficulty in mass selection. Herein, the reactions of neutral tantalum w...
