Abstract
Driven by wireless communication, cloud computing and artificial intelligence, IoT-based smart home systems achieve more efficient and safer household management compared with traditional home modes. This paper systematically reviews their definition, five-layer modular architecture, core supporting technologies, typical application scenarios, unique advantages and prominent industry challenges such as fragmented technical standards, data privacy risks and heavy dependence on networks. Corresponding optimization solutions and future research directions are proposed, providing reliable references for the design and popularization of high-performance, secure and user-friendly smart home products.
The design and implementation of a Matter-enabled Smart Plug capable of operating seamlessly across multiple smart-home platforms including Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and ESP RainMaker are presented.
The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of physical objects embedded with software, sensors, and technologies that connect to the internet to exchange and gather data with other systems and devices. This interconnected ecosystem enables inexpensive computing chips and wireless networks to transform everyday...

A comprehensive taxonomy is proposed that maps physical, network, and application architectural IoT layers against the consumer, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure IoT domains and identifies key gaps in current research and outline future directions for context-aware and adaptive trust management in edge-enable...
The review concludes that the long-term success of domestic automation depends on balancing technological innovation with privacy protection, affordability, interoperability standards, and environmentally responsible design, and it proposes a human-centred, policy-supported pathway for future research and development.
The proposed architecture eliminates the need for user intervention beyond the initial Wi-Fi setup and uses a peer-to-peer communication pattern that does not depend on central entities to achieve “zero-touch” and “swarm intelligence” capabilities.
