The effect of hybrid polyethylene and basalt fibres on the mechanical and durability properties of MWCNT-modified cement mortars

Abstract

A multi-scale reinforced cement mortar was developed by combining 0.05% multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with hybrid polyethylene fibre (PEF) and basalt fibre (BF). A total of 12 mixtures were prepared and evaluated for flexural and compressive strengths, rapid chloride migration, sulfate resistance (up to 120 days) and microstructure. Compared with the reference mixture without fibres or MWCNTs, mix P20B30 (0.20% PEF + 0.30% BF) showed an increase of 27% in 28-day flexural strength, an increase of 10% in 28-day compressive strength, a reduction in the non-steady-state chloride migration coefficient of 68% and a 72% decrease in sulfate-induced mass loss. These results identified P20B30 as the best-performing mixture on the basis of combined mechanical and durability indicators. The improvements are attributed to matrix/interfacial transition zone densification by MWCNTs and multi-scale crack bridging by hybrid fibres, which jointly restricted transport pathways and damage evolution.

The Effect of Fibre Loading on the Thermal, Physical, and Mechanical Properties of Waste Tire Rubber-Reinforced Polylactic Acid (PLA) Composites

This study investigates the effects of incorporating waste tyre rubber (WTR) fibres on the mechanical, morphological, thermal, and physical properties of polylactic acid (PLA) composites. WTR fibres, sourced from end-of-life tyres, were introduced into the PLA matrix at weight fractions of 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% using a si...

Mechanical Performance, Crack Resistance and Microstructural Evolution of Engineered Cementitious Composites Reinforced with Multiscale Hybrid Fibers

To further enhance the mechanical performance and early-age crack resistance of engineered cementitious composites (ECC), an ECC-based multiscale hybrid-fiber system was investigated. The system used carbon nanotube-modified polyethylene (M-PE) fibers as the primary reinforcement together with polypropylene (PP) and ba...

Synergistic strengthening and toughening of epoxy resins enabled by ultra-low content pristine single-walled carbon nanotubes

The inherent brittleness of traditional epoxy resins limits their application in high-performance fields. In this study, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were incorporated into bisphenol-A epoxy resin to investigate their effects on mechanical properties. SWCNTs/EP nanocomposites with varying mass fractions (0.0...

Effect of Macro-Synthetic Fibre Incorporation on the Mechanical and Dynamic Properties of Cementitious Composites and Fractal Analysis

To improve the brittle behaviour and flexural capacity of conventional concrete, fibres with different properties and proportions are added to the mix. In recent years, with advances in concrete technology, studies have focused on cement-based composites that use only fine aggregates and exhibit strain-hardening behavi...

The reinforcement mechanism of surface-modified basalt fibre on the mechanical properties of concrete

Basalt fibre (BF) is frequently used as a reinforcing material in concrete. In this study, to enhance mechanical interlocking at the fibre–matrix interface, BF was surface-modified using the silane coupling agent KH550 to produce modified basalt fibre (MBF). The physico-mechanical properties of concrete reinforced with...
