Abstract
Climate change and increasing global carbon emissions are driving universities to adopt the Smart & Sustainable Campus concept to support the Net Zero Carbon target. This study formulates a conceptual framework and implementation scheme that integrates smart technology-based energy efficiency, renewable energy utilization, and water and waste management within the campus environment. The proposed system includes an energy source subsystem (rooftop solar PV, PLN network as backup, and energy storage system), a distribution and control subsystem (smart panels, smart meters, sensors, and BMS), and a real-time energy dashboard-based monitoring and analytics subsystem. Analytical, the implementation of the Smart Energy Management System has the potential to generate energy savings of 20–35% through load control optimization and peak load reduction. The integration of rooftop solar PV and microgrid is projected to be able to meet approximately 30-60% of the building's energy needs; if 50% of the campus's annual energy consumption is supplied by solar PV, operational carbon emissions can be reduced by approximately half before additional offsets. These results indicate that the combination of IoT-based energy efficiency and renewable energy integration is an effective strategy to accelerate the achievement of Net Zero Carbon in the university environment.
Educational institutions in developing countries face increasing electricity demand, frequent power outages, and rising operational costs due to their heavy reliance on utility grids and diesel generators. This study evaluates a grid-connected hybrid energy system (HES) for the Balochistan University of Information Tec...
