TL;DR
A geriatric oncology fellowship subspecialty training track provides a feasible, structured approach to addressing APP educational needs and supporting high-quality, patient-centered care for older adults with cancer.
Abstract
Background
Older adults represent a substantial proportion of the population living with cancer in the United States (U.S.). As APPs assume an increasingly prominent role in oncology care delivery, specialized knowledge and skills are essential to address the complex needs of older adults with cancer; however, formal training for these providers in geriatric oncology remains limited.
Purpose
To identify knowledge gaps in geriatric oncology among APPs and develop a structured educational intervention to address these learning needs.
Methods
An institutional needs assessment was conducted using a modified Geriatrics and Gerontology Knowledge and Skills Survey distributed electronically to APPs. Findings informed the development of a geriatric oncology subspecialty track within an existing APP Oncology Fellowship program.
Interventions
A 12-month, competency-based fellowship track integrating geriatrics and oncology was implemented, incorporating clinical rotations, didactic education, dedicated mentorship, interprofessional collaboration, and structured evaluations.
Results
The needs assessment revealed significant knowledge gaps in atypical disease presentation, polypharmacy, comprehensive geriatric assessment, and treatment-related risk evaluation. A standardized curriculum and competency framework were subsequently developed and implemented.
Conclusions
A geriatric oncology fellowship subspecialty training track provides a feasible, structured approach to addressing APP educational needs and supporting high-quality, patient-centered care for older adults with cancer.
INTRODUCTION
The population is aging, driving a rise in disease prevalence and healthcare utilization. While oncologists increasingly care for older patients, trainees in subspecialty programs such as oncology rarely receive training in geriatrics. Despite increasing recognition about the importance of learning to care...
