Edaphic heterogeneity shapes bacterial microbiome composition and rhizobial diversity in smallholder cowpea farms of semiarid eastern Kenya
A baseline for soil bacterial ecology in Kenyan cowpea systems is established and it is demonstrated that site-specific, microbiome-informed strategies are needed for sustainable soil fertility management and effective deployment of native rhizobial inoculants in semiarid smallholder agriculture.
