Intermolecular Carbon-Carbon Naphthalene Coupling Involves a Radical Mechanism Driven by Cytochrome P450 in Alternaria alternata.

Dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) derivatives are precursors of biologically important molecules, including melanin and perylenequinones (PQs). Biosynthesis of DHN-derived metabolites requires precise spatial control of radical reactions to form specific C─C or C─O─C bonds. Investigating fungal PQ biosynthesis in Alternaria a...

Functional diversification across yeast lineages of the nucleus-vacuole junction forming protein Nvj1

Nucleus-vacuole junctions (NVJs) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae serve as an inter-organellar hub for multiple cell processes, including lipid transport and biosynthesis, an intra-nuclear quality control mechanism, and piecemeal microautophagy of the nucleus. NVJs are formed by complexes between Vac8 in the vacuole membran...

Evolutionary origins of protein novelty across an entire yeast subphylum

A broad computational investigation of genetic and protein novelty throughout the entire subphylum of Saccharomycotina yeasts shows that “invention” of new folds occurs more frequently through de novo emergence, and illustrates cases of evolutionary “re-invention” of existing protein folds from noncoding sequences.
