Session B Abstracts Mathematical models of flexible neuronal participation

The HVC nucleus of the zebra finch song motor circuit demonstrates an ability to restore the original birdsong after lesioning, even though neurons participate stochastically in song generation, and the unreliable participation of neurons may provide a flexible manifold for both learning and recovery.

Flexible neuronal participation within a reliable motor sequence

Cal calcium imaging of HVC projection neurons during freely produced songs is used to suggest that stable motor sequences need not rely on rigid repeated activation of the same cellular ensemble but can preserve temporal order while flexibly selecting which neurons contribute to each expression of the behavior.
